Piscicola New York
Attains BAP Certification
Last month our partner farm in Colombia, Piscicola New York,
received Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification. Piscicola utilizes a cage system in the Betania Reservoir in
the Magdalena River. Betania is an
ideal location because of its low Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT), a key
component to the healthy cultivation of fish. The average HRT of Betania is one month while the average
for most lakes is 1-10 years. As part of the BAP program, the farm constantly monitors
water quality at three different stations. If needed, corrective actions are taken in the case that
one of the quality checkpoints has been affected. Additionally, all aquaculture activity
in the reservoir is managed and restricted by the Colombian government. Read more

Staff Notes
Runners Corner: Mike,
Lisa and Lorena ran in the Burlington VT Marathon this month. There were 8,000 participants, of which
3,200 were full distance marathoners.
Mike ran the entire 26.2 miles, completing his 2nd marathon
ever! Lisa and Lorena were quite
the team as they ran in the 2-person relay.
These three gluttons for
punishment thought that the marathon wasn't enough...The weekend following the
Burlington Marathon, Lisa and Lorena ran in the "Pittsfield Hell Race" in which
they ran 10 miles on woods trails in the hills of Pittsfield Vt.
Just a couple days later, Lisa and
Mike ran in the 5k Pine Hill Trail Race in Rutland Vermont and this past Sunday
Mike and Lorena ran in the 10k Crowley Road Race.
On the 21st of this
month Mike starts training for the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon, which will
take place in October.
Although there is a healthy sense
of competition amongst all three, occasionally Mike gets some heat if he doesn't
participate in EVERY race.....
Meghan: Future Leaders
Last month Meghan Bouchie, one of
our Sales Representatives, headed to Capitol Hill on her first Future Leaders
trip. While there, she learned the
importance of legislation for S.510, the FDA Food Safety and Modernization
Act. The NFI explained the
significance of being supportive of the risk-based approach taken in this
bill. If S.510 is put in
conference and passed, the FDA will better be able to do their job. Additionally, Meghan was able to
understand the value of communicating to everyone that seafood is safe!
Birthdays
Larissa blew out the candles for
the 6th time at Tropical at the end of last month. Jen and Lorena also celebrated their
birthdays with us this month and John, our President, celebrated his birthday
for the 15th time with Tropical this week.
