The Evolution of Print Ad Design

Print ad design has come a long way in the past few decades.  If you opened up a phone book or newspaper back in the early 90's, these are typical of the ads you might see:

Old Ads

In the yellow pages industry, we call this "type in a box."  Back in the 60's, 70's, and 80's, that kind of ad might have worked.  All of the ads looked like that.  Then about 15 years ago, companies like ours began pioneering the use of full color in ads, sharper newsprint images and more creative design.  The result was something more like this:

 Ad - Before

In the past few years, graphic artists have really begun to live up to their titles.   Sharper printing techniques allow us to focus in on faces, enhancing the human connection people feel when they look at an ad.  Whenever we can, we have tried to replace boxes with curved lines, or with no lines at all, along with much more dynamic colors and graphics:

 Ad - After

Can you see the difference?  If you want your ad to stand out, a "type-in-a-box" ad will actually do that. If you want your ad to stand out for the right reasons, try something like the ad above. Looking for something even bolder than that? Take a look at the "Picture of the Month," below.

Thanks for your business,

Picture of the Month!
Super Hero
Seattle's Superhero: Yep, this guy is the real deal. He knows martial arts, wears a bullet
proof vest, and carries a taser and "net" gun. He has been shot at, stabbed, and even
had his nose broken in a fight. He was recently credited with stopping the theft of a
vehicle. He goes by the name Phoenix Jones though no one knows his real identity. One of our Washington sales reps lives a couple hours away from Seattle. His name is Preston Jones. They do look an awful lot alike...........

You can read more about Phoenix here. You can also watch a piece that CBS did on him here.

Overcast Man

Overcast Man: All Phoenix needs now is a super villain so we had our art department create one for him. I think he'd fit in nicely in Seattle.
