On Wednesday, March 24, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and the Early Learning Coalition of Orange County visited the City's Pottery Studio in honor of Florida Children's Week. The Mayor, Karen Willis, CEO of the Early Learning Coalition, and others worked along with children from the Parramore Kidz Zone to build mosaics for parks in the Parramore area. This video will show you what the City Beautiful is doing to help keep children on the right track.
Children's Hand Artwork was on display during the month of April at both Orlando City Hall and the Orange County Administration Building as a constant reminder to local officials to remember those issues that affect children the most. During Family Fun Day we served more than 130 children and parents at the Northwest Community Center on Sunday, April 10th. More than 10 community resource agencies were represented as well as 6 interactive exhibits for families to enjoy.
The Florida Department of Children & Families, Family Services of Metro Orlando, the Children's Home Society of Florida, Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, and the Orange County Public Library System and the ELCOC collaborated to make sure a wind of change continues to blow through Orange County and changes the way we view child neglect and abuse. All organizations either made or donated pinwheels to be placed in visible locations around Central Florida with the largest pinwheel garden being located at Arnold Palmer. Local 6 News covered the story! 86 Voluntary Pre-kindergarten students, their teachers and parents ventured into the Carl T. Langford and Dickson Azalea Parks to explore nature at the first ever City Critters' Nature Walk. Participants sat through an interactive class inside the Learning Lab where they focused on First Impressions, Tree Survival and an I Spy Nature Hike. They even found a beautiful butterfly garden! In between classes, students were in one of three outdoors centers enjoying hula hoops and jump ropes, the playground or participating in a drum circle. Nemours donated pedometers to calculate steps. Students walked, ran, jumped and danced a total of 145,314 steps.
