pied a terre A small temporary home in the city, used during the work week.

diaspora Derived from the Greek word "diaspeirein", this term means to "spread about", in the sense of sowing or scattering, and was also used in the Old Testament to describe the body of Jews living outside Israel after their exile to Babylonia in 6th c. B.C.
diktat A victor issues a punitive decree, or "diktat" to the nation overcome. The Germans called the 1919 Treaty at Versailles a "diktat" to the humiliation of the French. The term has since become widespread in English as a label for any harsh order issued by an individual or organization in authority. |
