Spring Lecture Series at the Athenaeum
On April 6 at 7:00 p.m., baseball historian David Proctor, of Blandford, will present a talk about his book Pie Traynor: A Baseball Biography.
"Pie" Traynor was considered the best third-baseman of all time when he played for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1920s and '30s. Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1948, he was honored as such for the first 100 years of baseball. Yet, today, his name is hardly mentioned in a conversation of third base greats. Proctor examines how baseball is played today with how it was played in "Pie's" day, illustrating how his stardom rose and declined. Following the talk, Proctor will show a twenty-minute video of "Pie" in his later years. You will see "Pie's" charm and personality that led to a successful post-baseball career in radio and TV. Proctor's book, co-authored by James Forr, will be available for sale and signing following the talk.

On April 13 at 7:00 p.m
in honor of National Poetry Month, an hour-long documentary film about Amherst native and renowned poet Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) will be shown, followed by a discussion of the film with documentary filmmaker Ernest Urvater.
Entitled "Seeing New Englandly," the film explores the poet's education, her lifelong interest in science and literature, her fascination with the search for the Northwest Passage, and her response to the tragedy of the Civil War. The script is by poet Susan R. Snively, of Amherst, and was made in association with The Emily Dickinson Museum in Amherst. The DVD is illustrated with more than a dozen pieces of fine art - mostly 19th-century landscape paintings from museums including the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford and the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. Professor Deborah Gilwood of Westfield State University and the Mohawk Trail Concert Players, performed the music for the DVD.
Lectures will take place in the Lang Auditorium on the lower level.
The lectures are free and open to the public and refreshments will be served. For more information, call the Westfield Athenaeum at 413-562-0716 or visit www.westath.org
