The Westfield Business Improvement District, Inc. (WBID)

and local Retailers, Restaurant Owners,

and Storefront Businesses

join together in the

     Best Retail Practices Program

A Free workshop was held on Thursday, February 10, 2011 in the

Westfield Athenaeum at 6 Elm Street to help local businesses learn how to:  improve their store's appearance, attract more customers, sell more products, and improve their bottom line!

Over 40 people were in attendance to take this opportunity to learn great display techniques and marketing strategies from  Christine Moynihan of Retail Visioning.

Mayor Dan Knapik kicked off the program with an inspirational speech on the state of the city.  Being a former business owner in the city the mayor is looking forward to the exciting changes happening and sees great potential for new businesses and existing businesses alike!  Sean Fitzgerald, of the Westfield Gas & Electric was also on hand to introduce Energy Saving Programs available from the WG&E for businesses.

Six (6) stores will receive individual in-store consultation sessions and are eligible to receive up to $2,000 in grant money to help with their improvements.  But many of the ideas which were presented can be done for free!  In order to qualify for the grants you must have attended the workshop.

Welcome to our new Westfield State University interns:

Tina Mancini and Theresa Forte

Both students are Communication majors who will be graduating this spring.  They will be using their education in marketing, public relations, and communications to help promote our downtown businesses.  We look forward to working with them!

Meet our downtown businesses....

We would like to personally introduce some of our downtown merchants to you in our coming newsletters.  One of our WSU interns, Theresa Forte, recently sat down with the owners of The Seat Weaver and learned what makes their shop so unique!

The Seat Weaver

Recently, my mother had received an old rocking chair from her mother, which had been passed down in the family from generation to generation. At the time, the chair had been sitting in a storage unit for years and served as more of an heirloom rather than a functional piece of furniture. I was surprised at the over joyous reaction of my mother when the chair came into her possession because it was tattered and in very poor condition. What I did not understand however was the significance behind the chair as she remembered it being in her grandmother's house on the family farm. The chair brought back bittersweet memories of her childhood. As I watched my mother, I thought, what a nice gift, to surprise her with its restoration so she could display this beautiful piece of artwork in our own home. This type of sentimental gift giving is one that the Seat Weaver fully understands!

The Seat Weaver, owned by Mark Remaly and Alice Flyte, is located at 24 Arnold Street in downtown Westfield. What started as a hobby in 1965 and sprang from an idea Alice had after making and selling baskets during yearly craft fairs and meeting many talented craftspeople ultimately became this quaint little shop. While Mark and Alice offer services such as the caning and restoration of chairs they have also provided a year round opportunity for these talented local artisans to sell their handmade items. The Seat Weaver is proud to offer one of a kind items such as delicately woven scarves, eclectic pieces of jewelry, beautifully stitched quilts and quilted handbags, handmade wooden jewelry boxes, as well as bead products, beeswax candles, bird houses, hand cream, goat milk soap, and more!
