At the corner of Elm and School Street is a collection of Artists, Businesses, Studios, Westfield Arts on the Green (A 501(c)(3) non profit), and Gallery 24 which is known as Creative Corner.
The businesses include Gallery 24, World Peace Beads, Prema Vidya Yoga Studio, and Piece of My Art. The Artists are Carol R. Balise, Hilary Carl, Jeffrey Caron, Kim Gilies, Laura Kamyk, John R. Mitchell, Charlie Leeland Moore, Gerald Tracy, and Rennata Tropeano.
Gallery 24 features a wide range of Art including Paintings, Pottery, Textile Art, Jewelry, Photography, Sculpture, Mixed Media, and hand bound journals. Rennata Tropeano, one of the artists notes, "There is something here for everyone, the styles range from Traditional to Modern. We have regional art from New England to the Southwest. We have even included smaller works with prices as low as $10.00 to include something that would fit into even the smallest room and the smallest budget."
Classes are being offered by these artists: Carol R. Balise, Hilary Carl, Kim Gilies, and Rennata Tropeano. The gallery is also offering a series of free workshops on collage and Mixed-Media on Thursdays from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. during the month of February. These will include a "Make and Take" of an ATC or Artist's Trading Card, a small piece of art that is the size of a collectible card such as a baseball card. "The idea is that is allows you to take on a project that is fun, not intimidating, can be completed in an hour, and helps many people to realize that creativity is not the same as being able to draw realistic items" notes Ms. Tropeano.
Gallery 24 has two openings coming up this month, "Passions" opening on Friday, February 5th, and "Fantastic Fibers" opening on February 20th. There will be a small reception for both at the gallery at 6:00 p.m. on the respective Fridays.
"Passions" will feature a collection of smaller art works and art gifts that make a more meaningful and lasting gift than chocolates or flowers. "Fantastic Fibers" will feature textile based art. Artist Carol R. Balise will be showing her collection of felted vessels, along with other textile treasures.
The Artists of Gallery 24 have been excited to participate in events such as the Winter Lights art auction hosted by the Westfield BID and Westfield on Weekends, and the Small Art Auction for Westfield Art on the Green. Creative Corner has reached out to other locations in the downtown district to help promote the arts and creativity. Westfield Yarn and Thread, My Favorite Place, Erin's Own Irish Imports, The Seat Weaver, Flowers by Webster, and Leo's Gallery and Deli have all partnered with Creative Corner in past projects and events. Even The Law Office of Kathryn M. Parakilas gets into the creative spirit with a Tuesday evening knitting group.
Ms. Tropeano stated, "When we opened in September, it was our goal to help bring art into downtown, and it continues to be our goal today".

The "Clean Team"
The New England
foilage creates a beautiful colored landscape for our city until it
fades and falls from the trees. Then its time for our Clean Team to fight the never
ending battle to try and keep the sidewalks clean for
our business owners and their customers.
Nelson, our hardworking Clean Team guy, (shown above), dumps one of the many loads of leaves raked out from our downtown businesses this fall. Maintaining the cleanliness of the downtown district is especially hard in the fall with all the many trees which line our streets.
We're happy to say most of the leaves were gone before the first snowfall!
Our Clean Team then transitioned right into clearing the snow from the sidewalks throughout the districts, with 3 full storms and 3 more which required sanding.
The team is well prepared to provide clear walkways throughout the dowtown. They will take out the snowblowers when receive 2 inches or more of snow. Hopefully we won't hit last year's total of 10 big storms!
