Greetings!

  GIVING THANKS!

THANKS to our volunteers who so generously donate their time, talent and treasure to SEBR.

THANKS to our foster families who take SEBR's Beagles into their home and treat them as their own.

THANKS to the transporters who spend hours on the road Saturday after Saturday to help get the animals out of the kill shelters and into the hands of Rescue Organizations.

THANKS to the kennel owners who, at a minimal cost, board and care for our Beagles that don't have a foster family.

THANKS to the veterinarians that treat our Beagles, often without appointments, usually without any medical history, but never without a discount allowing our donated dollars to care for the maximum number of dogs, year after year.

THANKS to those that support our efforts by visiting the SEBR web site, subscribing to our Newsletter and liking us on Facebook.

THANKS to our donors who give from their hearts as well as their treasure and never ask for anything in return.

THANKS to our adopters who open their homes and hearts and give our Beagles a second chance at life.

THANKS to our families, who like my wife Dee, make personal sacrifices so that we may have the time to focus our talents on rescuing and caring for the Beagles.

THANKS to the Beagles who come into SEBR and trust us to make them healthy, happy and find them new forever homes.

Every one of us at the SouthEast Beagle Rescue, especially the Beagles, wishes every one of you a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Jack

OUR BEAGLES' THANKSGIVING

According to the "experts" we should not be giving our Beagles anything but their normal dog food, even on Thanksgiving. OK, I guess we really shouldn't give them a turkey drumstick, gravy and onion dressing so they get sick to their stomachs. Much to their chagrin, we really do not often give our Beagles, Doolittle and Cherry, and our Yorkie, Penny, any food from the table. However, when the dining room is full of people and food and they look at us with those big brown sad eyes it would seem cruel not to include them in the festivities. Also, we find that because I fix their Thanksgiving plate our friends and relatives are more willing to respect our requests that they do not feed them anything "under the table".

I just wanted to share with you the compromise that we have found works for our Beagles:

  - - We take a nice small piece of white meat and cut it up into doggie size pieces. We remove theDooHeadIn skin, which has lots of fat that can upset a dog's stomach and avoid the dark meat which also has higher fat content. Of course, NO BONES, at all.

 - - Plain mashed potatoes and/or plain sweet potatoes only. Avoid the gravy, butter, nuts and sauces.

- - For vegetables like green beans, limas, carrots, etc. we set aside a little portion for the dogs before any butter, sauce or seasoning is added. Mushrooms are a no no.

-- Dee's dressing does not have any garlic and very little onion so we do put a little on their plates. If your dressing, or any other dish, contains a lot of garlic, onions, grapes or raisins just avoid giving them to the dog because they can be toxic.

-- I see a lot of expensive treats sold that contain cranberries so we do put some cranberry sauce on their plates.

-- We just do not give our Beagles any people sweets and watch that they can't get into any coffee or old coffee grounds.

-- By and large we try to give a portion that compares to their weight. I probably weigh 8 times more than Doolittle so giving him a full dinner plate would be equal to me eating eight plates of food!

Nov2010DogDinner

It is quite amusing to watch the difference in eating styles. Doolittle, our 12 year old Beagle, is already attacking the plate before it touches the floor and just swallows everything without chewing. That is why we cut everything into small bits. Penny, our 11 year old Katrina survivor Yorkie, eats with the gusto of a Beagle. We think she has been taking lessons from "Doo". Cherry, our 7 year old female, who probably has a little terrier, or is that terrorist, in her, first circles the plate sniffing the different contents. She will usually eat the turkey first and work herself around the plate. However, the cranberry sauce will be approached last, carefully tasted and probably not eaten. Doolittle, of course, is by now circling the table like a shark waiting for any bit of food to come his way.

Have a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving!

Dee, Jack, Doolittle, Cherry & Penny

SEBR BEAGLE STORY OF THE MONTH

Jefferson Update

I was ecstatic when I first saw our Jefferson standing tall on his two front feet! Sad memories of him painfully walking or wobbling on his wrists because of his deformed front feet were wiped away as his green bandaged legs were now straight and steady. I had been at the No More Homeless Pets Conference when Jefferson had his surgery, so his foster mom, Mary Jane, picked him up from Dr. Hay and began his rehabilitation. Only two weeks had passed, and there he was standing up tall and proud!

BeforeGroup1

The procedure sounds simple enough: position Jefferson's feet into the normal standing position and then lock the wrist into place using metal plates and screws. Of course that does not take into account dealing with bone grafts, abnormally worn wrists and underdeveloped and fragile bones which must be drilled into for the screws. All in all this was a very delicate surgery no matter how you looked at it. But Dr. Hay was extremely pleased with the outcome and the prognosis for Jefferson is good.

AfterGroup1Our immediate challenge was to keep our Beagle Boy relatively restricted for a few weeks. Under those green bandages are splints to support his wrists and keep the pressure off the plates and screws until the bone grows around everything and locks it in place. Mary Jane also has to put rubber gloves over the bandages to try and keep them dry every time Jefferson goes out for his potty break. We have a stroller for Jefferson so he can go along when Mary Jane takes her dog, Mikey, for their daily walks. Mary Jane retired as a nurse supervisor from the Veteran's Hospital, so Jefferson's paws could not be in better hands.

JeffXrayLRafter

We expected a few bumps in the road during Jefferson's rehabilitation and we are already dealing with:

-The breakdown of the soft tissue under the heavy bandaging holding the splints in place. We are taking every precaution to avoid an infection.

-When Jefferson now stands tall on his front feet he still does not fully extend his back legs. He walked with his back legs in a crouched position for so long that he never fully extends them, even now. His back legs are so thin and under developed from non use that he will probably need therapy down the road.

-Jefferson may still not realize that he can now walk normally. He still sits and waits to be picked up and carried. Of course, this is working in our favor right now since Dr. Hay wants us to restrict his mobility as much as possible. We may have to teach him how to walk "normally" once those restrictions are removed.

JeffSit

Jefferson asked me to thank all of the wonderful donors who made his surgery possible. We received donations to cover the full cost of his surgery thanks to so many of you! With Jefferson's surgery paid in full by your generosity, we were able to continue to care for the needs of other Beagles using the Rescue's regular operating funds.

At this time of Thanksgiving, we at SEBR are thankful that we became aware of Jefferson's plight, were able to correct his deformity, and he will soon be a merry Beagle free from his handicap and pain.

PUPPY UPDATE

Cuddles - The final Chapter!

I first met Cuddles on August 4th. She was such a little Beagle, but was so pregnant it looked like she had saddle bags and her belly was almost scraping the ground. We later found out she had 8 puppies inside her. We were all very nervous that the puppies would come too early and we held our breath every time there was a sudden change in her behavior. But Cuddles hung in there and on August 22nd gave birth in a 7 ½ hour ordeal that left her spent. It was also emotionally draining for Sally and John, her fosters, who watched her struggle for so long.

Although we lost two of the puppies, Angel and Mustang Sally, Cuddles gave us six wonderful happy and healthy puppies, each with their own personality. On October 29th all six puppies were adopted and went to their new forever homes. With all the physical and emotional stress they went through ,it was great that the adoptions all took place at Sally and John's home and Sally was able to kiss and hug each of "her babies" before they went off to the next chapter in their lives.

PuppiesGroup

Cuddles was spayed, vaccinated, received treatment for her heartworm disease and her adoption was finalized on November 14th. This sweet Beagle girl, who was found pregnant, abandoned, filthy, full of worms, fleas and ticks went off to start her life as a pampered pooch with a fantastic experienced Beagle owning couple.

I am sure that when anyone asks Sally why she accepts the challenges that go with fostering a pregnant Beagle and helping raise her puppies she can answer in a single word, "Cuddles"!
