Greetings!

What the THANKS in Thanksgiving means to me!

THANKS to our volunteers who so generously donate their time, talent and treasure to TBBR.

THANKS to our foster families who take TBBR's Beagles into their home and treat them as their own.

THANKS to the transporters who spend hours on the road Saturday after Saturday to help get the animals out of the kill shelters and into the hands of Rescue Organizations.

THANKS to the kennel owners who, at a minimal cost, board and care for our Beagles that don't have a foster family.

THANKS to the veterinarians that treat our Beagles, often without appointments, usually without any medical history, but never without a discount allowing our donated dollars to care for the maximum number of dogs, year after year.

THANKS to those that support our efforts by visiting the TBBR web site, subscribing to our Newsletter and liking us on Facebook.

THANKS to our donors who give from their hearts as well as their treasure and never ask for anything in return.

THANKS to our adopters who open their homes and hearts and give our Beagles a second chance at life.

THANKS to our families, who like my wife Dee, make personal sacrifices so that we may have the time to focus our talents on rescuing and caring for the Beagles.

THANKS to the Beagles who come into TBBR and trust us to make them healthy, happy and find them new forever homes.

Every one of us at TBBR, especially the Beagles, wishes every one of you a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

MEET A TBBR VOLUNTEER

Volunteer Spotlight-Cindy McCollough

Anyone that knNov2010 Cindy Awardows Cindy McCollough will tell you that there is no greater champion for animals than Cindy.  Just ask Hefty, Tulip, Kiwi, Merlin and Gizmo (to name a few) and they would tell you the same!  Cindy's love for animals began in Smithfield, Ohio where she spent the first 7 years of her life on a 168 acre farm.  After moving to Florida, Cindy's family pets always included at least one cat and dog.

As an adult, Cindy's heart turned to saving animals in need, particularly beagles and cats.  Lucky for the Tampa Bay Beagle Rescue! For eight years Cindy has volunteered with TBBR and fills the important role of foster parent to many beagles.  Her home right now includes six beagles, including Zeke, a certified Asthma Alert beagle.

In November 2009, Cindy started her own cat rescue named TANKS-Tending Abandoned Needy Kats Sanctuary.  Tanks was one of Cindy's own cats, a Burmese Kitten who suffered from diabetes.  Cindy had planned to name the rescue in honor of Tanks, and with the help of her friends Kerry and David Koppin, the acronym for TANKS was created.  TANKS rescues cats and kittens from high kill county shelters.  Older cats, blind cats and cats with other special needs are not an obstacle for Cindy.  Currently she has 23 cats ready to be re-homed by TANKS.

Nov2010Tank

Cindy's diligence in caring for her current crew is amazing.  Although the cats can free feed, and she has several auto-scoop litter boxes, her mornings and evenings are packed with cleaning litter boxes, bowls and counters .  And don't forget about the six beagles that wake her up for their A.M. meal as well!  Cindy's compassion and energy are endless when it comes to the beagles and cats in her care. Visiting the local veterinarian is almost a daily occurrence.  It is no wonder that for two years running, Cindy has won an award for outstanding service in animal rescue called the "For the Love of Pets" award.  Humans benefit too from Cindy's compassionate ways, as she is a charge paramedic on a 911 ambulance in Manatee County.

TANKS recently received their non-profit 501(c)(3) status from the IRS.  To see the precious cats that this wonderful organization has available for adoption or to offer your support please visit them on Petfinder at http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/FL930.html

HOW TO PUT THE "THANKS" IN THANKSGIVING

According to the "experts" we should not be giving our Beagles anything but their normal dog food, even on Thanksgiving.  OK, I guess we really shouldn't give them a turkey drumstick, gravy and onion dressing so they get sick to their stomachs.  Much to their chagrin, we really do not often give our Beagles, Doolittle and Cherry, and our Yorkie, Penny,  any food from the table.  However,  when the dining room is full of people and food and they look at us with those big brown sad eyes it would seem cruel not to include them in the festivities.  Also, we find that because I fix their Thanksgiving plate our friends and relatives are more willing to respect our requests that they do not feed them anything "under the table".

DooHeadInI just wanted to share with you the compromise that we have found works for our Beagles:

-         -  We take a nice small piece of white meat and cut it up into doggie size pieces.  We remove the skin, which has lots of fat that can upset a dog's stomach and avoid the dark meat which also has higher fat content.  Of course, NO BONES, at all.

-          - Plain mashed potatoes and/or plain sweet potatoes only.  Avoid the gravy, butter, nuts and sauces.

-          - For vegetables like green beans, limas, carrots, etc.  we set aside a little portion for the dogs before any butter, sauce or seasoning is added.  Mushrooms are a no no.

-          Dee's dressing does not have any garlic and very little onion so we do put a little on their plates.  If your dressing, or any other dish, contains a lot of garlic, onions, grapes or raisins just avoid giving them to the dog because they can be toxic.

-          I see a lot of expensive treats sold that contain cranberries so we do put some cranberry sauce on their plates.

-          We just do not give our Beagles any people sweets and watch that they can't get into any coffee or old coffee grounds.

-          By and large we try to give a portion that compares to their weight.  I probably weigh 8 times more than Doolittle so giving him a full dinner plate would be equal to me eating eight plates of food!

Nov2010DogDinner

It is quite amusing to watch the difference in eating styles.  Doolittle, our 11 year old Beagle, is already attacking the plate before it touches the floor and just swallows everything without chewing.  That is why we cut everything into small bits.  Penny, our 10 year old Katrina survivor Yorkie, eats with the gusto of a Beagle.  We think she has been taking lessons from "Doo".  Cherry, our 6 year old female, who probably has a little terrier, or is that terrorist, in her first circles the plate sniffing the different contents.  She will usually eat the turkey first and work herself around the plate.  However, the cranberry sauce will be approached last, carefully tasted and probably not eaten.   Doolittle, of course, is by now circling the table like a shark waiting for any bit of food to come his way.

Have a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving!

Dee, Jack, Doolittle, Cherry & Penny

  BEAGLE OF THE MONTH

Got Energy?

Do you enjoy walks in the park? A run around your neighborhood? Maybe a good old fashion game of fetch?  If so, we have the beagle (mix) for you.

Nov2010Sweetie3Hi! My name is Sweetie and much like my name I am a sweetheart.  I'm very lovable and gentle but most importantly I am beautiful.  I'm still very young and very active.  I'm looking for a high energy family that enjoys jogging, throwing the ball and racing around the park.  (Provided they could keep up with me)

I love toys, bones and like most beagles I enjoy food.  Popcorn and bananas are some of my favorite snacks.

I've been told that I'm not only beautiful but very smart too.  I know many tricks such as sit, down, stay, give paw, rollover, kiss, go backwards and drop it.  Of course when I'm "hunting" lizards I don't always listen.  You have to be very focused to catch those critters!

In addition to my many talents I am house trained and crate trained for nighttime.

Nov2010Sweetie1After a  long day of playing and having fun I enjoy cuddling up at night for a good snuggle.  Life is always good when you can enjoy the simple things.

If you think you have the energy I would love to make you my new best friend.

BAMBI II - ANOTHER TBBR MIRACLE BEAGLE

When they handed me Bambi II she was wrapped in a dirty old towel and was limp as a rag doll.  I could not help but question if she was going to survive the 45 minute drive to Dr. Corona in Sarasota or should I just head for the closest vet.  Dr. Corona once told me that if I brought him a dead dog there was not much he could do, but as long as it was alive he would always try to save its life.  Well, this was going to be a close call and as I drove I kept looking back to make sure the towel was moving and Bambi II was still alive.

I had received the voice mail about 11 AM this past Friday.  The family lived in a rural part of the county, owned several hunting Beagles and had this small female Beagle stray show up on their property the previous Sunday.  They put her in one of the outdoor kennels and intended to keep her.  However, on Wednesday she became ill and by Thursday she could not stand, had difficulty seeing, was vomiting blood, had blisters in her mouth and had severe diarrhea.  They were so sure she was going to die that the husband went out after supper and dug the hole where she would be buried.  But she was still alive Friday morning and they contacted TBBR.  I asked if she had been taken to a vet but was told no, it was too close to Christmas to spend money on a stray dog.

Nov2010BambiaThey were ready for Bambi when I arrived at Dr. Corona's and he immediately examined her, drew blood and started an IV.  I got a lump in my throat when he pushed on one of her teeth and it just fell out.  The x-rays showed nothing and all of the tests were coming up normal but she could not stand or see, was emaciated, weighing just 14 lbs., was lethargic and extremely weak.   Did she eat some poison? Did she have a seizure? There was just no way to tell.  Dr. Corona put her on supportive care and I left her in his good hands, reminding him that I did bring him a dog that was alive!

The report on Saturday morning was encouraging as she seemed to gain some strength and even went out for a short, if unsteady, walk.  Unfortunately, by that afternoon she seemed to be slipping back and was banging into the sides of her cage and having difficulty standing.   Despite the setback we elected to continue the supportive care.  When Dr. Corona saw her on Sunday he became slightly optimistic as she was able to go out for a walk, was able to navigate through the doorway and was pooping andNov2010Bambib peeing normally.  The best news was that she was eating like a Beagle.   On Monday morning Dr Corona was convinced that the immediate crisis had passed and, unless there was another setback, he would probably release Bambi on Tuesday.

When I went to pick Bambi II up Tuesday morning it was hard to believe that this was the same little Beagle that I had carried in, close to death, less than 96 hours earlier.  Poor little girl fell fast asleep on the front seat of my truck before we were halfway home.

Nov2010BambicWe will probably never know what cause Bambi II's condition.  All of her signs and test are normal, except for being underweight.  I am keeping this miracle girl with me for the next few days for close observation and so quick action can be taken if she gets sick again.  As I am writing this article Bambi II has fallen sound asleep at my feet.

Keeping checking the TBBR web site and I am confident in a few days you will see Bambi II listed as "Available for Adoption"

GOT 5 BUCKS ?

Thanksgiving, or any major holiday, is not at all a good time to be a an unwanted or abandoned animal in a shelter.  Most county shelters are closed for several days in a row and too many times animals are euthanized in anticipation of the space that will be needed for new animals that will be intaken over the holiday weekend.  TBBR has been working hard to save the lives of as many Beagles as possible from these shelters.  We received two cute female Beagles from Walton County on Saturday.  Tomorrow I will be heading to Bainbridge Georgia to get Bell and we are trying to arrange transportation for Missy from Louisiana as soon as possible.

It would only take a $5 donation to cover the cost of 1 day's boarding for one of these sweet Beagles.  Wouldn't that be a great way to Give Thanks on Thanksgiving Day!
