Chiropractic Best for Neck Pain
A new study in the Annals of Internal Medicine shows that seeing a chiropractor and doing light neck exercises for home are better than narcotics, aspirin, or ibuprofen for neck pain. About 75% of Americans will experience neck pain at some point in their lives and it's one of the most common reasons for a visit to the family doctor. In the study, the test group that received chiropractic care had greater and more sustained relief than the treatment group which included medication only. The chiropractic group reported a 75% decrease in pain and the medication group only reported a 33% change. After one year, 57% of the chiropractic patients remained better compared to only 38% of the medication only patients. This study joins a growing body of evidence that proves the safety and effectiveness of chiropractic care for neck pain. To read the entire article, click here. |

Herniated Disc? Don't Delay Treatment
Researchers from Philadelphia have shown in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery that patients who wait more than 6 months for the treatment of a herniated disc have significantly worse pain, lower levels of daily function, and are much less likely to fully recover. After 6 months, these individuals are likely to respond poorly to care regardless of their choice of treatment options, whether surgical or conservative. We have found this to be true in our clinic as well, as our patients who experience a disc injury are much more likely to recover quickly if they are examined and treated as soon as possible. Seeking care early allows us to quickly identify the patients who will need medications, injections, exercise, or a combination of the three for their condition. It allows us to monitor sciatic pain or other nerve issues (pins and needles, numbness, weakness) that are commonly associated with disc injury. It also allows us to identify those patients who have the need for more rapid surgical intervention. We have found that with disc injury the best hands on treatment and exercise program is with the McKenzie method, a series of examination procedures and home exercises that can rapidly diminish the effects of a herniated disc. If you have been told, or you suspect you have a herniated disc, please call for an evaluation as soon as possible. Our clinic is the only clinic in NEPA with two doctors certified in the McKenzie technique. Click here for more information. |

Weight Loss Helps Knee Pain
A 2011 study from Australia has shown that losing weight can produce a significant decrease in knee pain, even in those with pre-existing knee arthritis. Researchers have found that a body weight reduction of 7% can increase the thickness and quality of the knee cartilage and also increase knee range of motion. This information also suggests that cartilage damage in the knee is reversible by simply losing weight. Medication, surgery, and supplements like glucosamine sulfate have historically shown disappointing results in large groups of patient's with knee pain and are often no better than placebo. This research is promising for patients with chronic knee pain, where the end result can often be a total joint replacement. For those who find regular exercise difficult because of knee pain, a monitored weight loss and diet plan can be combined with a low stress exercise program like swimming or water therapy.
