CDC Launches New Online Prevention Course

"Violence isn't something that just happens that you can't do anything about.  It can be prevented."

Dr. Rodney Hammond, Director of CDC's Division of Violence Prevention

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently launched a new online training course, "Principles of Prevention".  It is for everyone interested in learning about violence prevention, the burden violence places on our society, and effective prevention efforts.

The course is free and takes 70-95 minutes to complete.  It features videos, animation, and interactive exercises developed to create a meaningful educational experience.  CDC approved continuing education credits are available for completion of the course.

Join the New Military-Civilian Advocate Resource Network

The Battered Women's Justice Project is launching the new Military-Civilian Advocate Resource Network.  It is intended to be a first stop for advocates seeking information about intimate partner violence involving military service members and veterans and their families.

 Graphic_Network

It includes information about the Department of Defense, Reserves, National Guard, and Department of Veterans Affairs systems and their response to IPV.  The site also includes pertinent articles and research on IPV and co-occurring conditions such as combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder and information on justice-involved veterans and veterans treatment courts.  There are also links to related Websites and resources.  The site includes a discussion component that will allow advocates to network and share information.  If the information needed is not found on the site or obtained through the discussion, an advocate can request consultation with a subject matter expert with specialized expertise working with military members, veterans, and their families.

Advocates must join the Military-Civilian Advocate Resource Network to be a member.  This involves receiving an invitation to join and setting up an account.  To submit a request to join the Network, send an email to  military@bwjp.org and put "Join Network" in the subject line.  An invitation and instructions for joining will then be provided.  This same email can be used to ask questions or obtain assistance with technical problems.

New Survey Presents Snapshot of U.S. Domestic Violence Services

Graphic_NNEDV2010Census

A new survey, conducted by the National Network to End Domestic Violence, reveals telling information about domestic violence services in the U.S. On September 15, 2010 -- one 24-hour period -- domestic violence victim advocates served more than 70,000 adults and children and answered more than 20,000 emergency hotline calls.  During the same 24 hours, more than 9,000 requests for services went unmet, largely due to lack of funding.   More

Greetings!

Today is International Women's Day! Check out this global hub for sharing International Women's Day news, events and resources. Take a minute to reflect on the amazing accomplishments of women and girls across the globe!

USA Today is commemorating International Women's Day 2011 with a special insert on newsstands this week.  Included is an op-ed column (page 22) by Sue Else, President, National Network to End Domestic Violence, on the critical importance of investing in services for survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

Congress needs to hear from you!

Preserve current funding levels for domestic violence and sexual assault programs

According to President Obama's FY 2012 budget, violence against women progUS Capitolram funding remains at current levels!

Congress needs to hear from you to assure these funding levels remain intact throughout the budgeting process.  The National Network to End Domestic Violence's Action Centerincludes telephone numbers, talking points and also an easy way to identify your representatives.

Take action today!

Recently, the National Center's Communication Director, Christina Walsh, participated in a national conference call with the White House Advisor on Violence Against, Lynn Rosenthal, to discuss President Obama's FY 2012 budget and funding for violence against women programs.  Vice President Joe Biden, as you'll recall he was the original sponsor of The Violence Against Women Act in 1994, opened the call emphasizing his ardent commitment to funding domestic violence and sexual assault programs.  He declared, "We need you!"

Updates for FY '08, '09, '10 and '12

Please note the very important DELTA program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention focusing on prevention of intimate partner violence received a small cut in the President's budget.  Of course, given the lean times, all programs of importance cannot stay level-funded or be increased.  Please consider mentioning DELTA in your calls as we must put more of our attention as a movement to prevention while preserving the capacity to provide emergency and transitional support to those in need today (see page 8 of the "Updates..." link above).

It only takes a few minutes to call your Representative.  If you have more time, write a letter, visit them when they are home in the district and if, by chance, you will be in Washington, DC, during the next few months, schedule a visit.  Every contact is important!

In recognition of the important services provided by shelters and other crisis programs,  the 111th Congress reauthorized the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (analysis) before adjourning in December 2010.  This U.S. Department of Health and Human Services program funds local domestic violence programs, state and territorial domestic violence coalitions and the National Domestic Violence Hotline(News Release) Marylouise Kelly, directs HHS'  Family Violence and Prevention Services Program
