Getting Good at Life Newsletter!
April  2010
Greetings!

It's Spring!

Now is a perfect time to embrace new things. Embrace change, embrace opportunity, even embrace new challenges. There's a catch, though. In order to embrace the new, you've got to let go of the old.

As with all things Spring, there's going to be some work involved. (Ugh! - I know). But the work I'm talking about will be rewarding. In this issue, we'll confront what's really holding you back, we'll find out how reforming your life can be a good thing, and we'll show you why it's important to take charge of your time and your health.

No worries, no excuses. It's time to spring forward and start  Getting Good at Life!

Warmest Regards,
Dr. Carolyn

Getting Good at Life Vlog
Seize the Moment

What great idea, innovative concept, or inspired plan are you sitting on right now? Why haven't you moved on it yet? While it is certainly true that "timing is everything," you must be sure that you're using that phrase in the right context--it's meant to be a principle, not an excuse.

It's been my experience than when we don't move on something that we truly believe is divinely inspired, fear is usually the culprit. Research has revealed that humans are essentially born fearless, with the exception of two phobias: fear of falling and fear of loud noises. But these are things that we normally adapt to as we grow up. All other fear is learned.

The good news is that anything we've learned can also be unlearned. That's right--you can overcome your fears if you are willing to change your thoughts and beliefs. Remember, God did not give you a spirit of fear (I Tim. 1:7). So why are you accepting something you were never meant to have? You've got the power to take control of your fears and destiny--and you can start today.

If you need motivation to get started on a fear-busting routine, first ask yourself what you'll regret if you don't take the next step toward your destiny. Second, confront your fears, and you'll soon see that the courage you thought was out of reach, will become available to you.  Finally, get started on the things God has placed on your heart.  Remember, the opportunity of a lifetime is only good during the lifetime of the opportunity.

President ObamaWhen Reform Gets Personal

If you've been anywhere near a television or a computer lately, you've probably heard about the new healthcare reform bill and the uproar that it's caused. But no matter what side of the debate you stand on, one thing is for sure - change costs!

Change is not just measured in dollars and cents. It's also measured by the intangible sacrifices that are required in order to accomplish a greater goal.  Sometimes you have to even sacrifice the approval of others.

Though positive change may be important to you, it may be intimidating to those around you. People tend to fear (and sometimes oppose) what they don't understand. But, don't let that stop you from bettering yourself.

This Spring, take a look at your life and find an area that you would like reformed.  Each day take small but measurable steps toward  change---clean up old habits, plant new thoughts, and water with consistent action--then, watch yourself flourish and grow.

And that's how you will Get Good at Life!

Move it Girl!

April is National African-American Women's Fitness Month. Critical health issues for all women are on the rise, and it is imperative that every woman, no matter what race, does all she can to actively manage her health. African-American women are particularly vulnerable to a plethora of health issues and the major risk-factor is a sedentary lifestyle.

Admittedly, while many love fast foods, decadent latte's, and  addictive reality TV shows, there are quite a few really working hard at shedding the pounds, despite the challenge of our cultural habits. But unlike our ancestors, our daily lifestyles, in general, don't always promote optimal health. Our work and even sometimes our recreation, doesn't require us to move very much. However, research continues to prove that movement is a necessary weapon against the foes of our physical well-being.

According to noted cardiologist, Dr. Richard Allen Williams, physical inactivity is one of the main reasons why African-American women have a higher mortality and morbidity than African-American men and Caucasian women under the age of 55. This is serious!

Though Jesus came that we might have life and have it more abundantly, we can't fully experience abundant living when we aren't at our physical best.  So, let's join together and take charge of our  physical success.  Make the effort to get up, get out, and move. Walk, jog, or even dance - take a tip from Nike and JUST DO IT!
