Out of School, Into the Bakery
Last week's high temperatures remind us all that summer has arrived. At Cookie Cart, summer means more youth employment training, more classroom programming, more sales events and of course, more cookies! This week youth employees have transitioned from working primarily during after-school hours, to a complete work day, something that most will experience for the first time. The shift brings a new dynamic to the bakery, providing new learning opportunities for young people like planning to bring a lunch, taking breaks at work and returning to work on time, and maintaining a positive attitude even when the day is long and tiring.

In addition to increased hours in the bakery, 15 youth will participate in the 360 Degree Program; Cookie Cart's classroom based work readiness program. They will identify potential careers, prepare résumés, learn about job search tools and hone in on their interviewing skills. Two sessions of the Customer Service Training Program will be offered in conjunction with countless community sales events, allowing youth to develop crucial interpersonal communication skills and apply those skills in a real world setting. The focal point this summer will be on preparing youth for the National Career Readiness Certificate examination. Nearly 30 youth employees will participate in the training program, so they can earn their certification in the Fall.
It promises to be to a productive and exciting summer at Cookie Cart. We hope you will stop by for a visit. It will be over before you can say "Snickerdoodle".

Rising Star
 | | June's Rising Star - Anoneils Davis |
Cookie Cart chooses one youth employee each month as our "Rising Star". Our Program Director and Bakery Manager work together to decide which young person who is striving to be their best. They look for a positive attitude, mindfulness of adult staff and youth peers, strong attendance to scheduled shifts, sales events and all training, demonstrated initiative and willingness to help others. This month, Cookie Cart staff chose Antoneils. Read his reaction to being named Rising Star on our website. |

Cookie Cart on the Road

Joe and Raashaun selling cookies
at the IDS Center |
Each summer, Cookie Cart takes to the road bringing fresh-baked to treats to hungry lunch-goers throughout the Twin Cities. Cookie stands are set up at area office centers and youth employees practice developing their communication and customer service skills with their visitors. Youth enjoy the opportunity to see diverse workplaces and network with professional adults, and customers enjoy meeting young people and buying delicious cookies!
This summer, Cookie Cart will have sales events every Tuesday and Wednesday at various Twin Cities businesses. These include: TCF Bank, Cargill, CARLSON, the IDS Center, US Bancorp Center, RBC Wealth Management, and Western National Insurance. Click here to see when we'll be at a site near you!
All funds raised at events help to support Cookie Cart and its' programs. If you are interested in hosting a sales event at your company, please contact Katie Fitzpatrick, Sales and Marketing Director, at 612-521-0855, x104.

National Career Readiness Certificates
In April, we told you about our new program, offering youth employees training to earn National Career Readiness Certificates. The NCRC is a nationally-recognized credential that certifies attainment of three skills that are highly important to most jobs: applied mathematics, reading for information, and locating information.
Cookie Cart is proud to report that in the first round of testing on Friday, May, 27, 2011, the first four youth employees completed the 3+ hour examination and passed all sections! This is an incredible accomplishment and we are looking forward to this summer, where we will ramp up the training for this test in order to certify a total of 25 young people this year. Finally, we want to thank the supporters of this program for thier help purchasing the computers for training and staffing support.
You can help us continue to offer important training to teens in North Minneapolis with a donation to Cookie Cart today! Thank you!

| Thanks for your ongoing support for Cookie Cart.
We couldn't do it without you!
Sincerely,
Matt, Ann, Katie, Taronda, Sonya, Anna
