Greetings!
Here come the holidays with all the joys of getting together with family and friends, celebrating the many gifts of the year. And yet, the holidays can be a real trigger for our hormones to get out of balance and undermine our enjoyment of this special time of year.
With the sugar, caffeine, alcohol, the rich foods and added stress, it is no wonder that by the time we reach the New Year, we are more than ready for a detox. Unfortunately, it can take weeks to get our body back on track from this short adventure!
So what can we do to still find enjoyment in the season and not spin off into mood swings, hot flashes and sleep disturbances? Here are a few easy suggestions:
- Simplify and downsize your holiday expectations.
- Spend time at events, doing activities with people you really enjoy.
- Set healthy boundaries, graciously say, "Thanks, but my plate is already full."
- Keep up your daily exercise (even just walking) it's great for managing stress and burning up extra calories.
- Set aside a daily 5-minute minimum for quieting yourself and your mind.
- Eat something healthy before going to a party.
- Take healthy foods to parties - roasted vegetables, flax crackers and hummus, fresh fruit.
- Limit alcohol intake - substitute with pomegranate juice and sparkling water.*
- Eat a healthy protein (nuts, cheese, slice of turkey, an egg) when you eat carbohydrates (sugar, breads & baked goods, pastas, alcohol).
- Plan events into your schedule that feed your soul: A walk around the lake, sitting with a loved one by the fire, enjoying the holiday lights, listening to your favorite songs of the season...
Do the best you can, hold yourself and others in compassion. Have a Magical, Peaceful, and Joyous Holiday Season !

Holiday Alcohol Tips
- Attend only the parties you really want to go to. One office party, for example, is sufficient.
- Opt for club soda or sparkling mineral water instead of an alcoholic drink. No one will know the difference except you.
- Eat something before you begin drinking. It will help the alcohol be absorbed more slowly.
- Steer clear of the punch bowl unless you know for a fact that it's weak on the booze. Some punches mixed with alcohol can be quite potent.
- Drink a glass of wine instead of a mixed drink or hard liquor. Drink it slowly and make it last.
- Arrive close to mealtime if invited to a dinner party. This way, you will bypass the before-dinner drinks.
- Snack while you drink. Food helps the alcohol be absorbed more slowly.
- Drink a glass or two of water in between drinks to prevent dehydration.
- Have a glass of water before going to bed. It might lessen the effects of a hangover.

hCG Program
Join Integrative Medicine Practitioner Jane Kennedy, CFNP, for the protocol you've been "weighting," for-how to burn fat and reclaim your lean and healthy body with hCG. After a successful group process last year Jane is offering her guidance and experience with hCG again beginning in January 2012.
Our program includes mandatory weekly group sessions since there is a powerful benefit in joining with others to reach a common goal. Our series filled fast last year and surely, will again this year - numbers of participants are limited. Jane recommends the following lab tests prior to beginning the hCG process. You can bring in any of these completed within the past year or get done prior to your first visit with Jane at Gordon Medical Associates.
Thyroid: TSH, Free T-3, Free T-4.
Blood Sugar: HgA1c, Comprehensive Metabolic Panel - fasting.
Women's Hormones: Estradiol, Progesterone, Free and Total Testosterone, DHEA-S (if cycling, complete on days 18-22 of cycle and include FSH & LH).
Men over age 40: Free & Total Testosterone, DHEA-S, Estradiol, Total Estrogens, PSA.
Contact Lizzie (707)-396-5809 / lizzie@gordonmedical.com for more information and read past newsletters regarding the effectiveness of hCG.
