New Music at JB Linear
Introducing the music of SPIKE MAIDEN M�LLER,
whose very nice woodwind quintet arrangement of "Love Came Down at Christmas" will make a good addition to your holiday season playing. The piece is not difficult, but uses a wonderful harmonic palette. Click here for score and audio samples.
 
There are two new flute and clarinet duets from Liz Leehey and Joe Armstrong: Adagio from JS Bach's violin sonata in g minor BWV1020 and an aria from Bach's St. Matthew Passion, Aus Liebe will mein Heiland sterben. Both are great for subtle and lyrical playing.
 
Another new addition is a setting of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto #2, 1st movement for clarinet choir. This uses the Eb soprano clarinet for the part of the piccolo trumpet in the original. Played correctly, an "effer" can sound remarkably like a piccolo trumpet.

Also for your holiday season playing is a set of 6 pieces written by Franz Liszt, "Christmas Tree Suite". Although several are Christmas Carols , they are more character pieces about holiday activities. An especially pleasing set of pieces for the holidays. There are settings for

JB Linear Music is carrying the flute version of Fernand Gillet's "Exercices sur les Gammes, les Intervalles et le Staccato pour la Flute". (Exercises for Scales, Intervals and Staccato for Flute) Fernand Gillet was the principal oboe of the Boston Symphony for 21 years and originally wrote this book for oboe and later made this version for flute. This is a huge book with huge implications for those who undertake its study.  A complete description is available from Joe Armstrong, who write the "flutist's forward to the book.

This is an unsolicited rave about a set of books I personally like. Choro Music (www.ChoroMusic.com) publishes books of Brazilian music for flute, clarinet, soprano sax and alto sax together in one book. The arrangements are not easy, but very satisfactory to play. The CD's that come with the books have fantastically musical accompaniments. Worth every cent, I think.
