EC12 Class 2012 Gone With the Wind Regatta - Atlanta, GA
ed. tap
Seventeen skippers from five states came to Atlanta, GA on the weekend of September 22 and 23 for the 2012 edition of the Gone With the Wind Regatta. Blue skies and a westerly breeze made sailing conditions ideal on Saturday. With one fleet, fourteen heats that included long upwind and downwind legs with short offset segments were completed. At the end of the day, the leader was Rick West with 44.8 points followed by Reichard Kahle with 48 points and Baron Bremer with 53 points. Ricky Gerry had 54 points and Joe Walter rounded out the top five with 63 points. Later that evening all of the skippers and their crew converged on the Allen's house to relax a bit and enjoy the 'Low Country Boil in the Atlanta Hills'.
Rick West EC12 CS and Skip
Host and RD Skip Allen presented a plaque to retiring Class Secretary Rick West reading in part "On behalf of all the skippers, crew, regatta committee and everyone else associated with the 2012 Gone With the Wind Regatta, we thank you for your guidance and dedication over the last nine years as Secretary of the EC-12 Class."
Sunday, typical inland lake sailing around the Atlanta area made itself present. Whatever wind was present was swirling all around making a good sailing course impossible. As soon as a thought to change the course came about, the very mild wind changed directions. Everyone maintained their composure though as the fleet was able to complete six more heats. On the last race, Rick and his #2 were both over early, he was blanketed on their restart and unable to make up enough positions to hold the lead. At noon, the final heat was concluded and the final scoring resulted in Reichard Kahle winning the event followed by Rick West and Baron Bremer.

Chester Springs Invitational by Ivor Walton
The second annual Chester Springs Invitational was held at Marsh Creek State Park near Downingtown, PA on September 29th. This regatta brings together members from three different clubs in the Pennsylvania New Jersey area - Chester Springs MYC, Mid-Atlantic MYC and Spring Lake MYC. There were skippers there from Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The format is rather unique, with Soling 1M racing in the morning and EC12 racing in the afternoon. This one-day, two-class, three-club event began at Mid-Atlantic in 2011 and continues with two events each year, one at Chester Springs and one at Mid-Atlantic.
The Marsh Creek Lake is large (500 plus acres), has good wind and provides some nice open water racing. The day was cloudy and cool with a moderate breeze from the north-west, and was perfect for both classes. We set a windward leeward course with a downwind offset to separate the boats. Each fleet completed eight races and the scoring allowed for one throw-out.

Chester Springs Vintage Marblehead Invitational By John Y. Stoud
The first semi-annual vintage Marblehead regatta was held at Marsh Creek State Park, near Downingtown, PA, on September 25, 2012. This regatta series is the result of discussions between Harry Mote, Ivor Walton and John Stoudt to try and have a small series of vintage Marblehead regattas in the Philadelphia region. These are being hosted twice a year, alternating between the Chester Springs Model Yacht Club and the Marbleheaders of Springlake. During the spring of 2013 the second event will be hosted in Springlake.
The Marsh Creek Lake is large (500 plus acres), has good wind and provides some nice open water racing. The day was partly cloudy and cool with a stiff breeze from the west, gusting to fifteen to twenty. We set a windward leeward course.
The following are the results of the eleven races sailed, with no through outs.
- Harry Mote - 16 points w/10 firsts sailing his own design double ender - a beautiful boat.
- John Stoudt - 33 points w/1 first sailing a 1934 restored Marblehead.
- Ivor Walton - 33 points sailing his recently completed Madcap - a nice boat.
- Dick Bardsley - 47 points sailing a Rusticator designed by Thom McLaughlin built by John Stoudt.
- John Kathman - 51 points sailing a Cheerio he recently completed.
- Bill Ewing - 70 points sailing a Pete Peterson double ender.
- Skip Hall - 79 points sailing a newly acquired double ender. Another nice boat
We invite other owners of vintage Marbleheads who live in the area to join us. We hope to see you at one of our events! You may contact the author at jstoudt309@gmail.com for more information.

Rock Hall RC Laser Regatta by Dave Branning
Rock Hall Yacht Club, site of the 2011 RC Laser North American Championship, hosted another great RC Laser Regatta on September 15th. Fifteen skippers answered the call for a day of odds and evens scoring in B sail conditions. Later in the day the last two heats were sailed with A sails, easily handling the dying breezes. It was a very tight series as any one of four or five individuals could have won this one with four guys tied after the first three races. In the end, Dave Branning finished strong and, in a tie breaker with Don Barker, gets the win with Don second and host/boat chaser Tom Lippincott third. One of the early leaders, Ryan Lippincott, ended up 4th and Christian Sunkler, fifth. Christian's son, Wiliam was first junior and Connie Ranney was the first woman. Seven out of the 15 skippers won at least one heat and only 3 points separated the top four. This was a tight regatta.
Conditions were very puffy especially in the middle of the two lap windward leeward courses. The regatta featured a very nice buffet lunch and wonderful Indian Summer temperatures on the Lankford Creek off the Chester River in the eastern shore of the Chesapeake. Thanks to the attendees from the Oxford and West Jersey Fleets who made the scene as well as the host skippers from Rock Hall YC.
A round of applause for the regatta team of "go to gal", Connie Ranney; Scott Ranney, PRO; Dawn Urbani and Heather Ransom, Scorekeepers.

Star 45 Region 4 Championships By John Emery
August 18, 2012
Dayton, Ohio
Miami Valley Model Yacht Club
Twelve Stars showed up for the largest regional Star championship in the nation, unfortunately someone forgot to invite the wind. Luckily for us we had a crack RD (Ralph Kanko and Dave Eckard) to set courses and kept the regatta moving. This was a one day event and we completed twenty races, using the progression / regression system. Stars seem to move in very little wind, but sailing into a hole or missing a wind shift could be costly. At one time or another everyone went into the blue fleet. When I checked the archive of the wind, I was surprised that the wind averaged about 4 mph with gusts of 12. During the regatta the top four boats exchanged the lead a number or times. In the end, John Emery took first, Bob Bottorhorn second, and Rob Hill third. Frank Sagstetter won the blue fleet. A variety of Star hulls were represented: scratch built wood, Ski-Doo, Blackwell, and Ozmun Design. There was also a range of skipper experience ( our newest member had never raced an RC sailboat) but using the progression / regression allowed everyone to compete at their level. Thanks to all the volunteers and competitors it was a very successful regatta.

2012 AC Classic Regatta
2012 AC Classic Regatta by Chuck Williams
For the last couple of years, the Lone Star Model Yacht Club has hosted the AC Classic in Tomball Texas. This year's event started at 9am Saturday, September 1st with 8 AC skippers in attendance. Six of which were AC-12's and 2 non-class AC-15's also participated and were scored. Skippers drove in to Tomball for the event from as far away as Dallas, San Antonio and Beaumont just to play with the big boats for the day. It was nice to see such a good turn out and the excitement of everyone.
And there off!
The race course was set as an Olympic course with the first leg being a triangle and the second the typical down and back "hotdog" up to the finish line. With the fluky winds that were available, this worked out really well and kept boats from heading back into on-coming traffic at the windward mark. Once the course was set, a quick skippers meeting was had before everyone took to the water for a short day of racing. The day stated out with very slightly overcast skies and a perfect wind from the south at about 5 to 7mph, unfortunately, this would quickly change. Racing was fierce from the get go, with Phil Runquist and Chris Macaluso trading bullets. After the first couple of races, the winds shifted from the west, which really began testing the skipper's mettle as it blew over the tops of some large trees and would just swirl over the pond from almost nothing to 12+mph gusts. Tricky stuff for sure. A couple of us were able to sneak in a bullet here or there during this time, but most of the action was between Phil and Chris. The fun continued through 6 races before the group decided to break for lunch, at which time the skies opened up and we received a torrential downpour for about an hour; a spin off storm from the recent hurricane in the gulf no doubt. Needless to say, that was it for the day. Ten very soggy skippers packed up their gear in the rain and said their farewells until the next time.
All in all it was a great day; just having 8 of these magnificent and majestic boats on the water is an amazing sight. Everyone involved seemed to have a really good time and there is already talk of putting together a fall regatta in November as the weather in Texas begins to cool down.
We would love to hear from other AC skippers around the country, or better yet, we would love to sail with you! Please contact our Class Secretary Gene Wisner and let's start a dialogue and get some boats on the water; new or old, doesn't matter as long as she sails!
