CanAm Shirt
2012 Soling 1Meter "CanAm Challenge" Regatta - Stowe, VT
Submitted by: Charlie Berry, Stowe YC

The fourth annual CanAm Challenge Regatta was held in Stowe, VT on August 4th & 5th. The Corinthian spirit of this regatta was in full display throughout the weekend. At registration, all competitors were given T-shirts with dueling Canadian and USA boats on the back with a "U.S. Eh?" banner. We had 11 boats from Canada (with the largest contingent from the Halifax, NS club), and 11 from the USA. Eight races (16 heats) were run on Saturday in light southerly winds, with 1 throw-out allowed. Bruce Nourjian ended the day with 11 points, closely followed by Jim Goddard and Paul Fixx, each with 16 points.

Sunday treated the group to an 8 to 12 mph southerly breeze, with stronger gusts. The RC managed to run 7 races (14 heats) by 1pm.

The Skippers

Bruce continued to build upon his lead, winning four of the races and throwing out a 3rd. He ended the regatta with 19 pts, followed by Jim Goddard (29 pts), Charlie Berry (33 pts), Boots Boutilier (39 pts), and George Townsend (40 pts) rounding out the top 5. The Team Award went to the USA group for the fourth straight year. The chant from Team Canada: "Wait 'til next year!" There is no question that the "friendly cross-border rivalry" is now an established tradition. A full report and results are on the www.stoweyachtclub.com website.

Region 6 AMYA Santa Barbara Championship and Colonel Bart Trophy

Region 6 AMYA Santa Barbara Championship and Colonel Bart Trophy

The San Francisco Model Yacht Club hosted a Region 6 Santa Barbara regatta on Saturday, June 30th, and Sunday, July 1st. The regatta was held on Spreckels Lake, in Golden Gate Park. 15 boats were entered, from San Diego, Sacramento, and several Bay Area cities. The Colonel Bart trophy is named after Colonel Roy Bartlett, a former club member, and has been sailed as an annual race since 1974.

Race Director John Super laid out 15 buoys, which constituted for different courses, challenging the racers to sail different beats, reaches and runs. John Christman, a US Sailing Federation Senior official, was the judge and umpire. All the boats sailed as one fleet, with a lengthy starting line. Each day consisted of nine races, with one throw-out.

Saturday was a typical summer day in San Francisco: foggy, misty, and cold. Winds shifted between West, Southwest, and South, from 4 to 8 knots, with stronger gusts, sometimes at inopportune moments. At times, as some boats were beating upwind, others were coming downwind. There was a lot of precision "thread the needle" sailing, and a few head-on collisions. At the conclusion of racing on Saturday, Ken Campbell, of the San Diego Argonauts, was in first place, followed by the SFMYC's Jason Spiller in second, and Jim Hensel in third. That evening, participants and guests were treated to a BBQ with steaks and all the fixin's at the clubhouse. Sunday's conditions were about the same as Saturday's with a bit less wind and a bit more fog. 13 boats made the start, and at the end of the day Ken Campbell was our Champion, with ten bullets in 18 races. Jason Spiller finished second, and Jim Hensel came in third.

Next year, the SFMYC will host the S/B National Championship Regatta on a weekend sometime between September 7th and 22nd, to coincide with the Americas Cup races. The club will charter a boat so that participants and guests can go out on the Bay to watch the "Big Boats when we're not racing the NCR. We'll announce the dates when we know more about the Americas Cup race days.

Soling One Meter Masters Championship Regatta
October 5 - 7, 2012
Notice of Race
Hosted by
Lakeside Inn, Mount Dora, Florida

Skippers!  I can only say, with the hard work and efforts of Alexandra and Jim Gunderson this first time regatta is going to be absolutely awesome!! A lot of effort by a lot of folks have gone into providing you, the skippers, an opportunity to show your "stuff" in the Master's Championship Regatta!

As you will note in the attachment and N.O.R., we have set an arbitrary limit for the first 30 skippers.  This is to ensure that each skipper will receive maximum time on the water, against some of the "best" Soling skippers in the nation.  Do you have what it takes to make the cut??

1.  Friday will be reserved for registration, check-in, the evening Meet and Greet and  some practice sailing ..... if you need it!!
2.  Saturday we race, race, race and in the spare time .... prepare to race!  Followed by an outstanding meal and entertainment session.
3.  Sunday we race and race some more followed by the awards presentation and another great "hit-the-road" snack !

Skippers, this is an absolutely wonderful location with all the amenities!!  I strongly recommend you contact Lakeside Inn as early as possible should you decide to come and prepare to spend the night or even the whole weekend of the event: http://www.lakeside-inn.com/ or just call 800-556-5016 to make your reservations for the weekend.

Bring your spouses and significant others so they can enjoy the downtown walking / shopping / and eating just a short distance from the Inn where YOU will be very busy .... racing!  This could become a truly memorable event.  We hope to see you there even if you don't make the cutoff!  Spectators and "backseat" skippers are welcome also!!

Please share this with other skippers in your fleet and let them know about this event then contact me even if it's just to say "Sorry! Can't make it!"
