Some of the greatest things happen when you go sailing!!!
Some of the greatest things happen when you go sailing!!! On March 31st Sun Coast Model Sailing Club in Punta Gorda, Florida was holding the Skippers Meeting prior to the start of the US 12 National Regatta, when club member Val Peterson appeared with his Soling in hand. Val didn't have the wrong boat he was just there to launch and sail his beloved #22 on his 90th birthday. We goofed because we didn't have cake and ice cream however our Commodore Jack Ward lead the entire crew in singing Happy Birthday to Val!!! Val has been sailing with our club form many years, he is there every Wednesday and Saturday the days we sail Solings and every now and than he gets #22 across the finish line in first place!! AMYA Chevrons Ernie Thorpe
If you ever see a model yacht with three gold chevrons on its sail do you know what you are looking at.
If not, it is the AMYA Class National Champion for its class. A great boat with an outstanding skipper.
Those chevrons, either black, green, red or gold represent the AMYA's recognition of excellent performance. The issuing of the chevrons and the publication of Nationwide regatta schedule published in Model Yachting, The Bulletin and on the AMYA website is my responsibility as Regatta Coordinator. But for this process I need the help of each regatta chairman.
The process starts with you going to the AMYA Website's Regatta page, selecting the "submit your new regatta" button and filling out the form. That action initiates a process that e-mails the data to me, helps me enter it into a Regatta Database, several reports of which are then FTPd to the Web Schedule, provides the data to the editors of Model Yachting and the Bulletin, finally causes the chevrons to be made and mailed to the regatta chairman. Any changes that arise, like date changes, NOR availability, contact changes etc should just be e-mailed to me at [email protected]
What events get chevrons? National Championships get Gold, Regional Championships get Red, A Club's Annual events get Green and a Club's championship regattas or annual scoring recap get Black.
Do events have to be limited to AMYA members? Sometimes! National and Regional Championships need to be limited to AMYA members. Club Annual Regattas can be opened to non AMYA members with the permission of the Class Secretary and a club's championship can be open to all entries.
Finally what's ahead. Sometime within the year we will add the capability to actually enter a regatta on-line within the application, a feature that will provide the regatta chairman with all the entry data automatically. Also a by-law change which will add another class of chevron for "Multi-Club Series" will be proposed on the next annual ballot.

1st Annual Soak at the Oak Regatta
| The Winners |
Saturday, May 5th, 2012, brought fourteen competitors to Shelter 5 at Oak Hollow Lake, in High Point, NC for the inaugural Soak at the Oak EC12 Regatta. They were greeted by the eager race staff, checked in, and spread out to set up lakeside on the grass. A light breakfast of coffee, donuts, OJ, and fresh fruit was provided under the large shelter. RD, Steve Helander discussed the course, starting prodcedures, penalties, and two navigational hazards close to shore. After the ceremonial flyover of multiple USMC F/A18 Hornets(honest, it did happen), the RD called boats to the water. Racing began under sunny skies, temps in the mid 70s, and wind from the SW at 5. Chris Kakavas jumped out to 2 bullets in the first 2 heats, capitalizing on a rare mistake by Skip Allen in heat one. Reichard Kahle found his groove, taking the next four heats. Behind Reichard, the fleet stayed tightly bunched in scoring. Racing concluded at 3pm, just before the rain came in
Sunday morning brought stronger wind from the ENE at 10, so the course was relocated. The RD set up a course that gave long upwind and downwind runs, and competitors could choose to hug the shoreline in light air, or venture out into open water seeking stronger wind. Winds ranged from 2-15 during Sunday's racing, with very little deviation from ENE. Ricky Gerry was very consistent, having only one finish outside of the top 3 Sunday. But it wasn't enough to catch Reichard Kahle, who took the overall victory. Chris K and Skip Allen battled for third with Gerry Cobley close behind. Trophies were awarded to the top five finishers, and the RD and staff expressed their thanks to all participants for spending their weekend at GMYC's first regatta. GMYC hopes to see everyone again next year, for the 2ndAnnual Soak at the Oak.
RD Steve Helander, Asst RD Ron Small
19 races (12 Saturday/7 Sunday), 2 throwouts
Trophys were awarded to the top 5 finishers: Here are the overall scores.
1. Reichard Kahle. 43 pts 2. Ricky Gerry. 49 pts 3. Chris Kakavas. 69 pts 4. Skip Allen. 70 pts
5. Gerry Cobley. 73 pts

Micro Magic Region 3 Regatta Bill CromieWow, that was fun! Nineteen Micro Magics battling it out in the Region 3 Championship Regatta April 28 - 29 under nearly ideal conditions in Punta Gorda, FL. Day one, Saturday April 28th, started with a light breeze which built, but favored 'A' rigs to the end of 13 races (26 separate heats). Race Director Art Hawes selected an excellent course for these little boats with a long second windward leg to shuffle the fleet giving those with a poor start and windward rounding time to regain some composure. The odd/even low point scoring system was used with 720 penalties. This meant everyone was eventually going to sail against every other skipper plus you had a break in-between races to tune and rest. It was immediately apparent that Baron Bremer was going to be the skipper to beat. If you discard his two throw-outs after thirteen races on the first day, he never finished worst than 2nd. Only Jack Ward and Martin Gray were somewhat close, but hardly within striking distance. During lunch Graupner USA was on site to administer our raffle drawing of their donated products. Frank Richards won a Micro Magic Racing kit while Martin Gray was the lucky winner of a Graupner MX-12 radio system. Thank you Graupner USA. Day two dawned with a strong breeze which meant it was going to be 'B' rigs sometime soon. The stronger winds hampered some and reshuffled the standings. In the end after six races (19 total for the event) we awarded five trophies in ascending order to; Baron Bremer, Martin Gray, Jack Ward, Bill Cromie and Jack Burwell. Good sailing skippers and thanks for your participation. 1 Baron Bremer 20 2 Martin Gray 29 3 Jack Ward 32 4 Bill Cromie 40 5 Jack Burwell 46 6 Jack Wubbe 66 7 Frank Richards 72 8 Roger Wilkins 79 9 Steve Rosenwasser 82 10 Paul Newfield 83 11 Bill Uhl 97 12 Frankie Novak 109 13 Frank Steffens 111 14 Jim Lavelle 115 15 Virginia Kendall 119 16 Bud Elder 119 17 Bruce Birnbach 120 18 Don Smith 125 19 Joe Hitchings 137 |
2012 Nor'Easter Regatta Report by Chuck Luscomb
The Nor'Easter is now in the history books... The First of four in our New England Cup Series, the Nor Easter is hosted by the Mystic River Radio Sailors at the historic FT Adams in Newport RI. This is by far my favorite site for RC sailing. Besides the fact that it was once the home of the Americas Cup and remains home to the historic 12M's that competed here, you never know what might sail your way. Pictured below is one of the most graceful historic 12M still afloat... WEATHERLY. What a treat it was to have her sail buy so close you almost could touch her. Sites like this make sailing scale 12's that much more fun. Newport and New England are also famous for constantly changing weather. The common phrase around here is... "If you don't like the weather... just wait a moment." Make sure you have your foul weather gear as well as shorts and sun block as you will often see the full spectrum of these conditions in one day. Saturday: We arrived to zero wind speed with fog. The Race committee chose to hold off until there was at least a little breeze. The Tide was going out which meant that without breeze, your boat would go out too! The bad news was that the very little breeze we did get did not arrive until after noon. Once it filled in and the racing/drifting got under way, we were able to get a few races in before it died again. Mother Nature toyed with us while we tried to complete one race. The tide adds an entirely new dimension to racing that you won't see too many other places. Dave Ramos and Dave VanCleef dominated while trading low point finishes while Luscomb and Leo duked it out for 3rd. We were able to complete 8 races before we quit for the day. Most joined up later for a wonderful meal and conversation at Coddingtons Brewery. The standings were as follows... 1 D.Ramos 18pts 2 D.VanCleef 20pts 3 C.Luscomb 29pts 4 J.Leo 29pts Sunday: We arrived to Sunny skies and 5-6kts of breeze out of the NNW as forecast. Dave VanCleef did not return as he had not fully recovered from a spring bug. A course was set in a hurry so we could make up for lost time. As the racing got underway, most went to B rigs in hopes of taming the building chop in the harbor. No sooner did the first gun go off when the breeze began to die once again. After the first break, A rigs were the order and things seemed to settle down a bit. Just before noon, while in the middle of the first lap, the wind died completely from the NNW and then came up again out of the SSE. We had to remind everyone that the now weather mark was still a gate as boats rounded and headed for the finish line. Could it get any more interesting? Actually yes... as we broke for lunch the S&S Yawl "BLACK WATCH" came into our dock to pick up some passangers for an afternoon sail. Here is a link to her history. http://www.nyharborsailing.com/classic/yachts/black_watch.htm Then, while we chatted with the Captain of Black Watch, along came the 12M US 17 WEATHERLY under full sail followed closely by another classic 12M GLEEM. After a full dose of classic yachts, the racing got back under way as the breeze swung around to the ESE and built slightly giving us about 10kts. A rigs remained and this was the most enjoyable stretch of sailing we had all weekend and it was worth the wait. At the end of racing the final line up looked like this.... 1 D. Ramos 27pts 2 C. Luscomb 44pts 3 J. Leo 50pts 4 B.Walton 53pts 5 A. Dion 93 pts 6 K. MacLellan 105pts 7 J. Baldwin 114 8 J. Skerry 123 9 D. VanCleef 128 10 T. Stone 147 11 K. Koehler 173 |
Race Report: North Bay 2012 IOM Spring Championship
Marin Civic Center Pond
76 degrees, wind (S,N,W) from 3-8mph.
12 skippers from two countries (USA & NZL)
13 Races, 5 Trophies
Yesterday's forecast did not hold true, wind finally filled in from the west from 5-8 mph as predicted but not until after 1:00pm, conditions prior made setting a reasonable race course a challenge.
Racing began on the island course with wind form the south then shifting 180 degrees after three races which held for two more races before we moved to the beach course for eight more races. Racing ended after 4:30 per the NOR, it just got too late in the day for the scheduled 16 races. Our outstanding Race Committee of Al Chernin and Jim Wondolleck did an outstanding job, their time, carefully consideration, and stellar attitude is greatly appreciated, can't have a regatta without guys like Al and Jim.
We were joined by two recent San Francisco transplants from New Zealand, Andrew Walker and Andy Rhodes. These two guys livened up the fleet to no end with their wit, banter and enthusiasm making the day truly enjoyable and reminding us all how to have fun sailing model yachts, looking forward to their return. Well done Andrew and Andy!
Gary Boell's Britpop USA 31 was moving very well in all conditions, Gary's day came to an early end with winch problems. Hans Wolff had an excellent day sailing his Two Dogs USA 73 fast with a bullet in race 8. Another skipper who was hooked up, Bill Wright's Cockatoo USA 09 never finished below 6th all day. Andrew Walker had is Walkerized Isobar NZL 1111 moving well, Andrew had the course(s) figured out in no time. Steve Toschi's Micro Brew USA 96 is getting faster each time out, it just needs to miss a few marks and others boats and it'll be on the podium for sure.
Two Penalty turn rule was in effect for contact with the zone, only a couple of takers!
Thanks to everyone for coming out, especially with the added Golden Gate Bridge weekend closure traffic.
Full Results attached.
