REGATTA RESULTS

 2012 V32 National Championship Regatta

The Tanglewood Model Yacht Club in Sebring FL was privileged to hold the 2012 V32

2012 V-32 Nationals
The V-32 Fleet at the 2012 Nationals

National Championship Regatta on Saturday, March 24th, 2012.

The regatta was held with very nice southwest breezes in the 7 to 15 mph range on Lake Grenada in the Sun 'N Lake Community in Sebring. The next day's forecast was for possible thunderstorms and higher gusty winds so Race Director Frank Thorley polled the nine competing sailors and all decided to try getting the regatta completed in one day. This provided the participating sailors with competitive sailing and allowed a total of 16 races with two throwouts to be completed getting all the races done on just one day of sailing.

There were quite a few spectators from around the area and many people expressed how much they enjoyed the racing. Several even asked about how to get involved in sailing remote control sailboats. It is always nice to be able to promote interest in our sport.

Larry Pascoe, the 2011 National Champion, brought the traveling V32 National Trophy from San Diego, CA along with his boat to race and defend his title.

In addition to the V32 National Trophy, the first three finishers also received trophies and gold chevrons. The winning skipper of the day was Tanglewood's Club Commodore Bill Henry with a total of 43 points. Larry Tregear (Tanglewood MYC) with 48 points sailed home with the second place trophy and chevrons followed competitively by Tanglewood's Regatta Chairman Merritt Wiley's 50 points for the third place trophy and chevrons.

Defending Champion Larry Pascoe raced to fourth place with 57 points. It was a competitive regatta with some very skilled sailing. Congratulations to all the sailors who competed and contributed to a successful regatta.

A special thank you to Regatta Chairman Merritt Wiley and all the Tanglewood sailors and their spouses who volunteered their time to putting on another successful regatta. Information and pictures on the regatta may be found on the Tanglewoodmyc.com web site.

 Shamrock Regatta Results

by David Branning

Jamie Betz, of Meadowbrook, PA, survived a final four race onslaught from Mt. Laurel's Dave Brawner to hold onto first place in the 2012 Shamrock Regatta held at Cooper River YC in Collingswood, NJ on Saturday, March 24th.

The fourteen boat fleet withstood strong winds and a college rowing regatta going on parallel to our race course as several races were down wind survival test to eliminate broaching. Eight different skippers won at least one race giving some credence to the close competition. Don Barker, of Chestertown, MD, had an early regatta lead and ended up third with New York's Hank Buchanan in fourth and Rob Seidelmann of Collingwood, NJ in fifth.

Thanks to the West Jersey RC Laser Fleet for hosting this annual fun event and to Jim Greenfield for doing his PRO, buoy placement, boat retrieval and results duties to support us.

Both events were sailed under ideal conditions, blue skies and "just" right winds.   A great way to share our sport with others and still have the "joy of sailing"

RC Laser 9th Annual Midwinter Championship
by Dave Branning

Congrats to the champ, Jim Kaighan and a big thanks to the Marco Island RC Laser Fleet, Commodore George Domenech and Regatta Chairman, Rocky Cale for again hosting a superb regatta. We appreciate the support of AMYA President, Dave Brawner as our PRO for the second year in a row. For the snowbirds who missed this regatta, consider next year, the first weekend in March, a perfect time of year with mid 80 degree temps and fair winds. Come on down in 2013.

March Madness

by Tom Phillips

The 2012 St Petersburg Regatta, held the 24th and 25th of March was called March Madness.
2012 March Madness Winners
Appropriately enough. It was maddening to negotiate winds from non-existent to serious B rig conditions. The course on the first day was a long beat and away from where the skippers were standing. Winds were light early, but increased steadily through the day.

Sunday the wind reversed giving us a downwind run toward the same marks and a beat back toward us. A rigs were used on Sunday.

The infamous FISHFEEDER. Sitting out in clear site. It claimed a few, and lived up to its reputation for reaching out and snaring the unwary. No longer a fish finder virgin, a moments glance back to check before tacking for the finish line put me into its clutches. Fortunately, it let go without damage, giving me a hard lesson. The class ranking system method was used and Promotion/Regulation racing began with scoring of the first race.

A big Thank you to the RD Brenda Pardee, her dad Jim Pardee and rest of the family as well as Baron Bremer who took charge of the regatta and gave the fleet an enjoyable experience. None of the staff lives within easy range of the lake, most had drives of over 4 hours from their homes, plus the expense of hotel accomodations and food.  That is going above and beyond to contribute to the class. The photo shows how intent they were in giving us a great racing experience.  Thank you all.
