REGATTA RESULTS

RC Laser Winter Regatta at Lake Naomi

This regatta has been known as "sailing in a box", but this year we christened it unofficially as the "Indoor RC Laser World Championship". Why? Well because we sail in an indoor pool with the assistance of 11 fans. So the "in a box" part is clear. While it is a 25 meter pool, those sides come up awfully quickly. We limit the start line to 7 boats to keep the crowding to a minimum. And, as far as we know, there is no other RC Laser regatta run in an indoor pool.

This year we had pretty much the same participants as last and the results were as follows:
Jamie Betz - 37
Dave Brawner - 47
Nick Mortgu - 56
Dean Neely - 66
John Whipple - 74
Ken Shaw - 82
Sue Neely - 95
In thinking about those scores, keep in mind that we did 21, two and a half lap, races in the span of four hours (with 3 throw outs and breaks every hour).

It was great competition and camaraderie in 80 degree weather up on the otherwise freezing Pocono Plateau. Many thanks to Bill Clausen for serving as Race Director. For three race videos, search for 'rclfleet9guy' on YouTube.

Feb 18 and 19, 2012
EC-12 Region 3-B Championship

The Palm Beach Gardens Model Yacht Squadron, the club and its volunteers provided their usual hospitality, and this time with weather to match. 31 Skippers started with the weather almost perfect, 85 degrees, sunny skies to open the day on Saturday with winds that were mostly SSE, light, shifty, with the windward mark somewhere in the middle of the average of 40 degree fluky oscillating shifts and 0 to 2 knots After lunch, the wind turned fairly steady and increased through the day within the A rig range and we had a great day of sailing.

EC 12 Regatta Valentine's DaySunday the weather was great again and wind came from the perfect end of the lake. SSW wind was steady and increasing through the morning to 6-8 knots giving us a terrific B rig race day. Baron Bremer sailed in his own regatta, with everyone else chasing, but none getting close.

Trophy's were presented by RD Jon Luscomb and Assistant Dick Reinke to the top 5 positions plus Fred Pfiel who captured the Ancient Mariner trophy.

2012 "Frostbite" Race Report

Mark Cooper
Commodore
Clearpoint Model Yacht Club

On the weekend of January 21st & 22nd, 2012, 38 skippers made their way to Pasadena, TX to take part in the 2012 "Frostbite" Regatta for Victoria Skippers hosted by the Clearpoint Model Yacht Club. Some of the best Victoria Skippers signed up along with many new faces, making it the largest "Frostbite" in the 11 year history.

With the wind blowing 12 to 18 from the south and temps in the 70's, I headed over to the lake on Friday afternoon to meet, greet and check-in the 28 early registrants, and to open up the course for some tuning and practice. In the end, a maximum of 10 took to the water with wind gusts at times reaching into the high teens.

Saturday morning the skippers were greeted with hot coffee and pastries and once again temperatures that you could only dream of in January. This was a far cry from conditions we have experienced over the years. Winds were slow to build from 3 to 8 from the south, shifting to the south west and late in the day drastically to the west. Lunch time found the skippers enjoying the customary hot potato soup and sandwiches that so many have come to expect over the years. Thanks to Karen & Wilson Henry and my wife Traci for providing the meal. At the end of day one, the results were Brig North taking an early command, followed closely by Hew Hamilton, Eric Rosenbaum and Chuck LeMahieu.

Day two found the same temperatures, but now with steady winds from the excellent direction of South. This created the perfect set up for Micky to establish a windward/leeward course with an off-set and gate allowing for an additional 8 races to be completed. Those who practiced with the high winds on Friday would now see their efforts rewarded as the winds blew from 8 to high teens and some gusts well into the 20's were not uncommon. By the end of day two, an additional drop, and the last two races determining the overall outcome, Hew Hamilton stood atop the podium followed closely by Brig North and then Chris Macaluso. This was indeed one of the closest finishes in the history of this event and it went down to the wire and score sheet to calculate. Final results and complete breakdown can be found on-line both at the Victoria Yahoo Site as well as the Clearpoint Model Yacht Club website.

For those of you who did not make it this year, I hope you will consider joining us next year at "Frostbite" 2013. http://www.clearpointmyc.org

2012 WVRCM Seawind Winter Blast

By Al Stiewing

Eleven hardy souls braved the ravages of winter and the mid sixties temperatures to compete in the 1st 2012 SeaWind regatta of the West Valley RC Mariners, February 18th in Litchfield Park, AZ. Partly cloudy skies and light, variable winds, which swirled around the compass all day, made for challenging sailing and plenty of close competition in the twelve race, 2 throw out, event. With velocity and directional changes all day, no lead was safe and no side of the course was favored for long. Last at the first mark was no problem, as you lead the fleet around the second mark. Got a nice lead on the final beat thirty yards from the finish as the wind dies, don't look back; here comes the fleet 10 boats abeam with the wind from astern.

Mike Eades edged Al Stiewing for 1st with three bullets and more consistent sailing. Talk about consistent sailing, Hal Birkey captured 3rd without the benefit of a first, the only one of the top nine without a bullet. And competitive sailing; fourth through eighth places were only separated by 6 points. Rob Shaw edged Ray Dagenais by two points. Ray slipped past Dennis Desprois on a tie-breaker and Chuck Goerke nosed out Rowland Stephens by one point. George Kramer, by virtue of his win of the last race captured ninth over Harvey Mickelsen.

Top Five:

1. Mike Eades              26 points

2. Al Stiewing             30

3. Hal Birkey               47

4. Rob Shaw               52

5. Ray Dagenais          54

GTMYC CR-914 Racing report

The Fleet has been blessed with almost ideal racing conditions every Sunday! A stark contrast to last winter when sever cold limited our sailing weekends. We have relocated to a pond at the Tulsa Community College campus at 81st and Hwy 169. The old pond was drained when a dead body was discovered in it. All of the fleet agrees that the new location is better than the old location so we will be there for the foreseeable future.

GTMYC Sailors
GTMYC Sailors

Racing has been a lot of fun this year; we have consistently seen 8 to 10 boats participating every weekend and have had visitors using our loner boat on multiple occasions.   The racing has been very competitive.   Newcomer Roger Adams has advanced quickly from getting lapped to being in the heart of the fleet.   Racing has become very competitive with multiple skippers bagging first place finished every weekend.

Model boat sailing is a great way to advance you sailing skills. The tactics and strategy are identical to large boat racing, but piloting the boat from the shore adds a whole new perspective to your boat racing.

If you are interested in visiting the GTMYC, please visit our web site: http://www.gtmyc.org. We race every Sunday that is warmer than 40 and less windy than 20 at 2pm.

CR-914 Midwinters

The sailors who participated in the CR-914 Midwinters had a great time enjoyed perfect weather with winds out of the SW at 10 to 15mph, nice sunshine, not to hot. Vince did a great job pulling through 16 races, but it would have been better see him sailing. Nevertheless, we all had a great time and again thank to all who came from away. Jim from Pompano Beach, Mike and Colin from the Keys.
RESULTS

1st - Joe Russell 26 points
2nd - Jim Ellis 31 points
3rd - Christian Flebbe 33 points
