Seawind Region 5 Winners 2011 SeaWind Region 5 CR

by Al Stiewing

The Valley of the Sun's warm temperatures, blue skies, and light winds were replaced by a cold front which brought uncharacteristically cool temperatures, clouds and a moderate breeze for the December 17 & 18 championship hosted by the West Valley RC Mariners (AMYA Club #207). Held at Litchfield Park Lake, the 13 skippers were met with an 8 knot ESE breeze and the promise of perfect sailing conditions for the Seawind, even though the competitors had to wear long pants and jackets. Seven different skippers won a race during the final 11 races of the day

2011 Seawind Region 5 RegattaDay two found a steady westerly breeze of 6-8 knots under gloomy clouds, and raw cool temperatures. The uniform of the day included gloves and multiple layer of clothing with the temperatures hovering around fifty degrees.

The race for the podium was tight throughout the regatta as evidenced by the close grouping of the leaders. Dave Nydell held off the pack with a 14 point victory over Chuck Goerke who leapfrogged Dean and Peter for second. Peter Jennings, only three points behind, held onto third only three points ahead of Dean Johnson in fourth and Dennis Desprois captured fifth only four points behind Dean.

Successful events like this do not happen without the hard work of all the people involved. In addition to the hard work of the race committee Steve Sherry, Dave Nydell, Chuck Goerke, the keeper of the equipment, and Al Stiewing we also thank all the members of the club who show up early and stay late to help with the setup and tear down each day.

New Year EC 12 Regatta - Naples, Florida

By Dick Hedderick

The Naples New Year Regatta was host to 32 EC12's on January 14 & 15, 2012. Running two fleets under the promotion/relegation system there were 18 boats on the line in each fleet.

The weather on Saturday morning was a cool 50 degrees with shifty winds blowing out

of the North at 10-15. NOT the usual Naples winter weather. Starting off with B rigs and eyes tearing from the wind, skippers faced a challenge going to the first mark. Many skippers missed the first mark or fell below the lay line on their first starboard approach. By noon the wind eased to 5-10 and skippers had sorted things out. The afternoon was nice A rig conditions.

The weather on Sunday started just plain cold at 40 degrees, but the wind was a pleasant 5-10. By 11 AM, the wind had built to near B rig conditions, but most skippers endured with the A rig till racing ended at 12:30.

Alan Perkins put on an amazing display of starting, boat handling, and catching the

shifts. After 17 races and with 2 throw outs, Alan had 7 firsts and only 31 points.

The competition in the rest of the top ten was very tight. Positions changed often as

skippers faired well, but then judged a shift wrong and the fleet passed them by. The

next several positions were separated by only a few points.

EC12 Beat to windward in Naples, FL

Many thanks to RD Bud Cassidy, Jack Wubbe who handled scoring. Bob Harlan did a Herculean job of launching boats both days. Many thanks to Laura and Frankie Novak for hosting more than 50 people in their home Friday night. The party and dinner Saturday night provided a great opportunity for the fellowship this group provides. See you all next year, January 12&13, 2013. (Warmer, they promise.-ed.)

Gunnison Memorial Trophy

The Sun Coast Model Sailing Club, Punta Gorda, Florida has many interesting sailing events throughout the sailing season. One of them is known as the Gunnison Memorial Trophy.

Check out our site: www.suncoastmodelsailingclub.net

History: Cal Gunnison was the President of the Gunnison Brothers Tannery which was located in Girard, Pennsylvania. One of their major clients was Wilson Sporting Goods who made all of the NCAA Basketball. The trophy was gifted to the club by his brother Boyd Gunnison, in Cal's memory. This was their idea of a "fun" regatta.

It works this way: the racing begins with the boats wishing to race divided into two fleets "A & B", six races are scored and the top four skippers from each fleet are placed into pairing brackets which then become the "Final Four", they match race one boat against the other until the final two are reached. The winner of that race is the "Champion" for the year. (like the NCAA March Madness J)

This year's event was sailed on January 7th and trophy winners were: 1st Art Hawes, 2nd Al Dion, 3rd Bob Graham, 4th Bill Uhl and 5th Jim Child. Last year's winner Jack Ward served as Race Director.
