The ARCS Anacortes Radio Control Sailors club 288 are very pleased with our first official regatta and as the winner was from British Columbia we may have to include" International" in our regatta name for next year. We had a great regatta. The weather was perfect with sun and winds in the 2 to 6 knot range.

Larry Stiles set the courses and we had a lot of help from the Soling sailors from our group.  With the help and good weather we were able to sail 17 races on Saturday and 12 on Sunday.  The races lasted for about 12 to 17 minutes each and there was very little down time, except for a lunch break each day.

We had a no host dinner Friday night for those who were in the area and a dinner and social time for all who could attend Saturday night.  We are hoping next year to have more attendance.  However, for our first regatta, there were 14 entries and 13 sailed, with everyone having a good time.

 40th EC12's National Championship

One of the oldest and most active AMYA Classes held their 40th Class Championship Regatta at James Island County Park in Charleston, SC hosted by Class Secretary and RD Rick West. Thirty- four skippers took part in the event held November 2-5, 2011. Three days of racing saw light and fickle winds on the first day and B-rig conditions the other two days. The fleet was divided into three fleets for promotion and relegation sailing based on the class ranking system that had been in effect this year, eliminating the usual seeding races. The first race was not scored, giving all a shot at defending or improving their position prior to the scored race.

Seven former Class Champions and the current World Champion Ricky Gerry made for stiff competition.   Region 2 Director and 3-time class champ Jarle Wathne began in B fleet, 3 time champ Mark Reinhart began in C fleet along with John Cleeve from England, who was the class champion in 1979, sailing a boat he obtained three days before. These champions had not sailed much in the past year but still showed their skill and advanced to the A fleet. Fantastic sailing, and a lot of work for no points. Way to show how it is done. We were fortunate in having several other former Class Champs as well. Baron Bremer '10, Carter Cain '83, Reichard Kahle '04, '09.

2007 Champion and AMYA President DAVE BRAWNER sailed well in all conditions to take his second Class Championship. Dave is learning to love swimming in Charleston in November. Congratulations to the 40th NCR Champion.

We had shorts and shades on Thursday, and buttoned up with chill north winds on Friday and Saturday. One of the highlights of the regatta was the technical demonstration provided on 'fetching the mark', which held up the racing for a while. (Photo by Skip Hall)

A terrific award banquet was held and we had a silent auction for a short kit provided by Skip Allen, Tom Germer and Bob Dudinsky. Also auctioned off were Sails provided by Sails, etc. and Sirius Sails to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society organized by Mark Smith.

Awards were presented to the Current AMYA President and Champion DAVE BRAWNER by the 1st AMYA President and Hall of Fame Member RICH MATT, who finished 3rd in the 1971 Class Championship.

Newport 12 Meter National Championship

The Newport 12 Meter NCR was hosted by the Helmsmen MYC #23 on Saturday, October 22nd, at El Dorado Park, in Long Beach, California.

The boat count of eight was down by two from last year's event. The participants this year were all from the Helmsmen MYC, as hoped-for entrants from other clubs did not participate. Early morning fog had mostly dissipated by the time that the Skippers' Meeting began, and the sun broke through the clouds, raising the temperature at the park to a comfortable level. Class Secretary Don Dixon welcomed the skippers and presented the plans and rules for the day's competition.   When the boats hit the water, the winds were light, and fears of a repeat of previous years' slow racing appeared jus-tified. The first three heats took well over an hour, at which time a break was called. The fourth heat was even slower, as the winds had dropped off further, and it was decided to break for lunch. However, as the skippers enjoyed their meal, the breeze began to pick up, and by the time the boats were launched for the afternoon races, the winds were relatively strong. Although there were some tricky shifts, dead spots were virtually nonexistent, and spirited, close racing became the order of the day, even though the two long weather legs in the course tended to stretch out the field at times. A few missed marks and an occasional bump cost some skippers penalty turns, and some competitors experienced equipment problems, resulting in a few DNFs. The last race finished before 3 PM, and following the trophy presen-tations, the skippers headed for home following an enjoyable day of competition. Special thanks go out to Helmsmen members Bill Herrera, Al Kuhn, and Dean Maurry, who, despite not owning boats in the class, provided much-needed help in running the regatta and taking pictures..

2011 Leftover Bowl

The 2011 Leftover Bowl for RC Lasers  was held on November 26th in beautiful weather and light air on Cooper River in Collingswood, NJ. PRO, Jim Greenfield and his able assistant, Star Class multi-champion, John MacCausland, kept the odds and evens format on pace in the light and shifting SW breezes. Sixteen competitors were able to enjoy the balmy day and the fine hosting of the West Jersey RC Laser Fleet. We sailed 7 races, 16 heats, in a windward leeward course with a gate for the leeward marks. This kept the mark roundings clean and gave the comptitors a choice in the light breeze.

Rob Seidelmann won the day by two points over Class Secretary, Dave Branning and AMYA President, Dave Brawner, who tied Branning on points. Brawner recently won his second EC12 National Championship last month. Fourth place went to Skip Lippincott of the host fleet and fifth to Roger Vaughan form Oxford, MD. In all 8 skippers won at least one heat and five skippers won two or more races in this highly competitive series. Thanks to the West Jersey RC Laser Fleet for hosting this annual event that has become a fixture on the RC Laser calendar.

Footy Region 2 2012 Regatta Announcement

It is my pleasure to announce that the 2012 AMYA Footy Region 2 Championship will be held in Orangeburg, NY on April 21, 2012. The NOR and application have been posted in the Files section of the Yahoo FootyUSA group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FootyUSA/), as "2012 Region 2 Championship Regatta NOR.pdf".

The host club is AMYA#296, North East Model Sailers, which sails Footys. Victorias, Land Sailers (in the Giants [Metlife] Stadium Parking Lot) and is trying to establish an RC Laser fleet.

Orangeburg, NY is on the border of Regions 1 and 2, just a few miles from either the NJ Garden State Parkway's northern terminus, the Tappan Zee Bridge, or the New York Metropolitan area. Our lake was featured on page 8 of the Spring 2011 Issue of Model Yachting.

We hope to see all of the Footy champions in April to gauge how high the bar has been raised this year.

Thanks,
Carl Hansen
