This is a copy of an article that was carried on Sailing Anarchy about the 2011 Alamo Classic Regatta. It was submitted by Ray Seta and does a great job exposing RC Sailing to the larger sailing Audience.

yep, it's real

Have you ever wanted to fly over a race course in a Helicopter? Have you ever wanted to play Sailing Judge or Umpire on a crowded Mark Rounding? Have you ever wanted to go to a Regatta for one day and get 17 Races completed. Ever wanted to shout a Racing Rule out at a Skipper during a crowded Leeward Mark rounding and he's only standing 2 feet away from you? And know your shouting the correct Rule cause you already know them from the same book as big boat racing!!! How about standing with a perfect view of a Starting Line from an elevated position and see the "Mid-Line Sag" every time? Have you ever wanted to go to an out-of-town Regatta and never have to hook up a trailer? or maybe pay for a Hotel room for your Crew? Have you ever wanted to be in the most intense racing situation, come out of it with the lead and never drop an once of your beer? Try Radio Controlled Sailboat Racing!

Mark RoundingJust like big boat racing you can find a R/C Sailboat Regatta going on anywhere in the Country on any given weekend! Check with your Local Hobby Shop for any local Clubs or go the American Model Yachting Association and you can find Schedules and Club listing on any part of the Country! And the most comprehensive website devoted to R/C sailing around!

This past weekend the Woodlawn Sailing Club...aka "Pirates of Woodlawn" - Commodored by Ray Seta , hosted it's Annual Victoria Class Alamo Classic Regatta out of San Antonio,Texas. With a Steady breeze of 10-15mph, heavy winds for this Class, the day was perfect. Think of this, it must fun when we throw a R/C Regatta in Texas and they come from as far away as Alaska and Canada! With 17 Races ran with 19 boats and a full day of Sunshine and Alamo Beer and "mucho winds", what more do you need?! The annual event would not be complete if it wasn't for the annual long distance race around the Lake's Lighthouse and back. A distance to windward of 400 feet! Doesn't sound like much, but try it with a boat that measures in at only 30". That boat get rather small out there! The Bragging rights this year goes to Chris Macaluso, from Houston ,TX. and past Victoria National Champion for winning the race called the "Alamo Classica Intergallactica". And then to do one better, he comp leted the weekend by winning the Regatta to do the "Double Down" for the weekend. We even give a Trophy for the Highest Points with finishing all Races. This year this award went to Peter Randolph, also from Houston and first time R/C Regatta attendee! He's hooked now!

Standing on elevated scaffolds for a better view of the Start Line every Skippers has a perfect view of the Line and the Race course. Races typically last only about 10 - 20 minutes with the voices typically Start at the Pinraising in volume at the Start, Mark Rounding, Port/Starboard Crossing, and cheering at a close Finish.........so does this sound familiar? Sailing with the exact same Rule Book that the Bigger counterparts do, it's a real test to able get your head (and body) out of the boat and view it from afar. It get interesting to actually be calling an "inside overlap" when viewing it from the rear. But it's all in fun and the Spirit of Competition is always around. There are times that you could actually take your hands and place them around your eyes and block out all the surrounding objects and watch an R/C start and swear it looks like the Big boats starts you would watch on TV or UTUBE. Get a skipper to put a Transmitter in your hands and you'll be hooked!!!

Coming from the big boat world myself I can confirm the level of stress for Sailboat Racing is the same....the beer is just a lot closer!

Ray Seta...aka Capt Jack Seta

 EC12 2011 Wisteria Cup Regatta
By Tom Phillips

The 24th annual Wisteria Cup Regatta, hosted by the Charleston Model Yacht Club, was the final event for the 2011 EC12 Dixie Cup Series.

Plenty of sunshine and a high around 80 degrees both days. Saturday gave us westerly winds blowing about 5 to 10 with higher gusts. Joe Walter and Reichard Kahle (later withdrew to help run the regatta) got off to a good start in the morning when the breeze was light but after lunch when the wind came up, Ricky Gerry started throwing down the bullets scoring seven first place finishes in the last ten races of the day. Alan Perkins was always right there scoring mostly top three finishes and at the end of the day, after two throw outs, was only one point out of the lead behind Ricky. Joe was in third with Baron Bremer just behind followed by Rick West in fifth place.

Sunday turned out to be a better day than Saturday. Ricky Gerry managed to hold on with consistent performance. Baron Bremer, the current National Champion, won the day moving himself up from fourth to Second with three first place finishes and no worse than a fourth. Alan Perkins slipped to third overall after a few unfortunate mark roundings and Rick West stayed in fifth to round out the top five.

Ron Lacroix was theRD and Pauline Lacroix and Becky Perkins took care of scoring. Bill Coates provided hand crafted half hull trophies, and was also the winner of the Wisteria Cup Trophy, which is given to the last place skipper who completes all of the races and is good for a free entry to next years event.

Reichard Kahle had already clinched the Dixie Cup Championship. Charleston will again be the site of the 2012 Champions Regatta
