Micro Magic Summer Sizzler Regatta

June 18, 2011 - Litchfield Park, AZ

By Mike Eades

10 Skippers braved the triple digit temperatures buoyed by the forecast of good winds for the 2011 Micro Magic Summer Sizzler Regatta.

Unfortunately the forecast was only half right as winds before lunch were particularly weak and fickle leaving the fleet affected by periodic puffs and holes making no lead insurmountable. Mike Eades won the first race going away despite using his "B" rig but in the following 5 races Dennis Desprois and Dave Nydell, with occasional great runs by Jay Barnes, ruled the day. Jim Ball suffered from unreliable battery problems all day.

After lunch winds picked up to around 5-7 mph making for some spirited close racing. Dennis Desprois proved his consistency to win with 16 points (12 races, 2 throwouts) followed by Mike Eades, 25 and Dave Nydell, 28 points. Jay Barnes 36 and Harvey Mickelsen 54, winning the last race of the day rounded out the top 5.

It was great to have east valley skippers Dennis Desprois and Tom Ruttledge join us and we owe a debt of gratitude to Pat Barnes for recording the finishes for us. Another enjoyable WVRCM Regatta!

Soling Region 4 RCR

by Mike Wyatt

The Western Reserve MYC hosted the 2011 Region 4 RCR help June 4 - 4 2011, in Madison, OH. Fifteen Soling 1 Meters skippers from Canada, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Ohio and Entries were divided by choice into two fleets- nine for the Gold (Regional Championship), and 6 chose the Silver Fleet (for newer sailors).

There was a tight competition in Gold Fleet between Jerry Callahan, of Cincinnati, Class Secretary nominee Frank Vella of the Michigan MYC, and Shaun Berrington, of Ontarion, CAN.

Sunday morning dawned with the promise of slightly cooler weather- but even less wind.  Sunday's battle become a contest to see who could keep his boat moving in the light/ non-existent air.

After all discards (3 of the 19 Heats), Jerry Callahan is the 2011 Soling One Meter Region 4 Regional Champion- congratulations Jerry!

In Silver Fleet, Larry Lamphier's added 2 to his 5 wins on Saturday, plus scored 2's and 3's otherwise,  Lamphier was the clear Silver Fleet winner.

Winners of the 2001 Century Cub 2011 30th Annual Century Cup Report
Elon University, Elon, NC
By: Cameron Hunt - RD

The 16 Captains attending the Thirtieth Annual Century Cup Regatta held by The Piedmont Model Yacht Club at Elon, NC on June 11-12, 2011 were blessed with weather in the low 90's and enough wind, though light at times, to race 22 heats.  The 2 fleet promotion relegation heat system was used.  Each captain was seeded according to the class seeding list and sailed at least 11 fleet heats.  One throw out for the fleet heats was allowed.
Five captains registered eleven bullets and five scored second places.  Reichard Kahle led at the end of Saturday's sailing and maintained his lead on Sunday with Rick Gerry staying hot on his heels. Finishing just out of the plaques was Bob Mersereau in sixth place.
We had light and variable wind from the South for most of the heats.  The changing winds of Elon gave all points of sail as the boats traveled down the course. The course was set for starboard roundings which seems to not be the normal and required some planning as they made the mark roundings. But all went smoothly and very few disagreements were evident.
Thanks to all the skippers, wives and girl friends for making this a fun event.
All in all, the fleet was very close with only 14 points separating the top 3 finishing positions as the scores below reflect.

  EC12 2011 White Rose Regatta

YORK, PA. Our weather forecast for the weekend looked like we would have some unwanted breaks for Thunderstorms.

Turns out the weather bill was paid although on Sunday there were some races with times of drifting.

We had 7 skippers take bullets, with El Presidente Brawner taking 7 of them.

The large single fleet and the use of 720 penalty turns kept most on their toes and their noses clean with a few exceptions.

Our out of Region guest, Jack Ward from Florida, one of the skippers getting a bullet came in a strong 4th  behind the top three, Brawner, Ramos and DT. Not very far behind, and sailing very smart and relaxed was Alex Ramos, also with his own bullet and a pair of deuces which landed him a 5th  place trophy. Sidenote: Ramos Jr. beat the old man in 6 races. Spectacular racing for his last Father/Son outing before Naval Academy Induction in two weeks.

Thanks to all the skippers for coming, putting up with the heat and high humidity....and the 720's, and thanks to my regatta Staff, White Rose commodore Chuck Aiken and Pete Houghton as well as the Aiken Family for all the help and the Sat eve get together. RD, Doug Wotring

  1. Dave Brawner, 36. 2. Dave Ramos, 42. 3. Danny Thomas, 47. 4Jack Ward, 69. 5.Alex Ramos, 81.
