A Message from the President
There is hope that Winter will eventually end and I can go sailing again. The AMYA volunteers have been hard at work getting us ready for this. Check out the Club Resources section of the AMYA website. With the regatta season kicking in, there are some great additions there that you should know about. If you need to publicize your regatta, you can use one of the new posters. Don't have a starting tape? Well, the files are now available in the Club Resource section. Need a score sheet? Those are also available. The score sheets are formatted for printing on 24"x36". Don't worry that you don't have a large format printer in your house. It's a simple process to download this file and send it to an office supply store like Staples, Office Max or Fedex Office. Staples charges $2.97 per sheet. You can either walk in the file or use their website. Trust me, the results are just plain cool. You can do the same thing with the poster files. Staples does an awesome job. The trick seems to be to ask them to print it on shiny paper. Obviously, I am not too well versed in printer language. Have you ever gone to the lake just to sail, then a buddy shows up and now you want to race? Darn, nobody thought to bring a start tape. Well, here is another benefit of having the start files available online. Get your smart phone out of your pocket, navigate to the start tape file in the Club Resource section and click the link. Bingo, the tape starts playing. At least it does on an Iphone. You'll have to let me know if it also works on other smart phones. Let me know what else you think we need in the Club Resource section. Now it's time for me to dust off some boats and charge some batteries. See you at the pond.

CR 914 Midwinter Regatta C.B. Smith Park Pembroke Pines FL
On 2 perfect sailing days, sunny skys and temps in the mid 70th , 13 sailors from 4 States entered the 2011 CR 914 Midwinter regatta. With the excellent management of the PRO Tony Gonsalvez, who mastered the the first day of races and did an even greater task of teaching our alternate race committee, (Virginia Russell and Bobbie Lawrence with assistance from Vanessa Flebbe) who ran the second day of racing. 26 Races where sailed in winds NE and ENE of 8 to 10mph, with sometimes down to 5mph, but basically it was a pretty steady condition. The winner was experienced CR 914 sailor Rick Martin, followed by Christian Flebbe, Fred Deutsch and Chris Hughes. 7 different sailors won at least one race, so that the competition was very close and many times won at the first mark by who was able to stay out of the pack and get free wind.

Palm Beach Gardens Valentine's Regatta
EC 12's continued to battle in the second contest of the year at Palm Beach Gardens Valentine's Regatta Consistent B rig winds both days gave the skippers plenty to handle. At the end of the weekend, Class Champion Baron Bremer stood alone in the lead. But the rest of the A fleet skippers were as tight as it gets. GOLD FLEET Place Skipper /Score
1 B. Bremer / 35 2 M. Gray / 67 3 F. Pfeil / 68 4 J. Steacy / 69 5 E. Gelina / 70 Not to be outdone, the leaders of the B fleet made it close also. SILVER FLEET Place Skipper Sail/Score 1 B. Elder / 34 2 B. Cassidy / 35 John Lusconb and Bob Greer did a great job and changing to 720 turns for penalties at the start kept the fleet out of trouble most of the time. The Seventh Maritime Model Exposition

Middleboro Model Yacht Club Editors Note: Many of use know how hard it can be to secure a site and sometimes give up.. It's great to see hard work pay off! Congratulations to MMYC.
SAILING SITE SECURED! Yesterday three MYC members attended the Grand Rapids Yacht Club board meeting. Bob Kress made the presentation to the board. He outlined the races we ran last year, our efforts to "stay out their way" and our offer to provide a sailing scholarship each year for their sailing school. Several GRYC members offered their support and the resolution to permit us to race each Wednesday starting at 5:30pm passed unanimously. Our season will coincide with theirs; Memorial Day through Labor Day. Of course it didn't hurt that Bill Waring and Bob are both former Commodores of the GRYC. We hope to have several tune-up races in April and we also offered a US-12 demo day during April to GRYC club members for anyone interested to try their hand at radio-controlled model yacht racing. This is an important milestone for our club - having a convenient place to sail for $250.00/year is an incredible bargain. Thank you Bob and Bill! - Larry Brannan Learn more about their club here.

In Memory of:
As the Commodore of the Woodlawn Sailing Club, I am sadden to inform the RC Community of the passing of Mr Porter Loring Jr. on January 14th, 2011. Porter was well known amongst many RC sailboat builders and skippers. In the late 1990's and early 2000 years , Porter had a goal to own or have built for him a boat from every best known National/World Champion from as many Classes he could get his hands on. This included builders such as Graham Bantock, John Hanks III, AJ Moritz, Dave Ramos, Herb Hoser, and Buddy Black to just a very few. At the height of his collection Porter owned closed to 65 ready to sail/race boats. All kept in immaculate condition in his climate controlled warehouse. During this time Porter would never refuse a chance to show off his collection to any one or groups of skippers that would want to spend time with him just talking sailing. Porters love for sailing went all the way back to the America's Cup days with the Classic J boats and later even being a Major cash Contributor to many America's Cup campaign. Porter was even once chosen to be the 17th man on the 1995 Young America's "Mighty Mary" boat and got to sail her in after a practice session as Skipper in San Diego. Porter was so proud of this that he even had Dave Ramos custom build and paint a CR-914 with the matching Mermaid design. This boat sits proudly in my home as Porter wanted it to be. In his later years when it came time for Porter to downsize, he asked me to find as many good homes and deserving skippers with an opportunity to buy and own these boats. I for one and many skippers in the San Antonio area would not otherwise have an opportunity to own some of these professionally built boats if it had not been for Porter. The Woodlawn Sailing Club and it's current luster would not be what it is today if it wasn't for Porter's support throughout the years. I for one can honestly say without a doubt I would not be a committed to RC Sailing as much as I am if it wasn't for the opportunities and knowledge that Porter bestowed onto me. Porter never said no to anything when it came to donating a boat for a Classroom teaching session or a raffle for a regatta as part of the fund raiser. Porter never would accept money from me for anything he had that I wanted or needed for the good of the Club or my personal collection. Porter was a dear friend of mine and many sailor, not only around the World but here in San Antonio, TX. His name will be engraved as with all WSC members as that has passed. With a plaque that reads "Sailors never pass on they just sail over the horizon". Sail on my friend! PORTER LORING, Jr. November 26, 1928 - January 14th, 2011
