AMYA Bulletin Volume 3, Edition 18 | December 8, 2010 |
Greetings!
This is really getting fun. The incoming Board is actively planning for the start of our term, which begins January 1st. My post election travels are complete at this point. After each and every meeting, I was left with the same feeling of good fortune to have the current staff available as we move forward.
Also, there are some more volunteers to announce. Ernest Freeland of Annapolis, MD will be taking on the duties of putting this Bulletin together starting in January. Though the idea is in the infancy stage, Chuck Luscomb of Deep River, CT with the assistance of Rod Carr of Redmond, WA will be assembling our new online webinar programming loosely called AMYA TV.
Good luck to everyone participating in the Soling Nationals this weekend in Charleston. If you haven't been there before, you're in for a real treat. It's a great sailing venue with a terrific host.
Now is the time to be getting your regattas on next year's schedule. Please get that information to Doug Hemingway, our Regatta Coordinator.

T37 Nationals Seattle Yacht Club The morning of the 2010 T37 Nationals was clear and bright, but calm. Just before 10 am. a light breeze came up from the northwest and we set out the buoys for an upwind leg, a reaching leg out to a jibing mark and a reaching leg to the downwind mark. The Nationals were being hosted by the Seattle Yacht Club from their docks in Portage Bay. The Yacht Club towed a floating pier around for the skippers and had even covered the entire pier with brand new, blue outdoor carpet. It was deluxe, a perfect setup for race day. The first four races were sailed in light breezes, but the wind held steady from the northwest so the upwind leg was right on and the starting line was true. By the fifth race the wind had started to breeze up quite a bit and we had some excellent sailing in perfect conditions. By the seventh race the wind was getting quite strong and we wondered how many more races we would be able to get in. Portage bay is quite open to the north so there is a significant fetch for the waves to build up in. The T37s handle a wide range of conditions beautifully and the boats were still sailing superbly in the stronger winds and bigger waves of the mid afternoon. By the 9th and 10th races, the wind had moderated again to a fine sailing breeze, so that even after ten races and a full day of sailing, it was hard to stop. The final results put Peter Shorett in first place with four first place finishes. He sailed a very strong regatta and had excellent boat speed throughout all of the different conditions. Peter was awarded the beautiful walnut perpetual plaque made by Commodore Allan VanNess. Peter's name is inscribed on the first brass plate on the plaque and Peter gets to display the plaque until the 2011 Nationals at which point the plaque will pass on to the next champion (unless Peter can hold onto it!) Second place went to Will Lesh, Class Secretary and the builder and designer of the T37 Class with two firsts and three thirds. Robyn Lesh, Will's daughter and a very competitive dinghy skipper on the Bellingham High School Team, tied for third place with Bates McKee. To give an idea of the level of competition, Bates was the coach for the University of Washington Sailing Team for four years! The top four finishers were all within 3 points of each other, so it was a very close regatta. Commodore Allan VanNess put in an excellent showing with a fifth place finish, right after Bates. Next year brings two Olympic gold medal skippers into the fleet so the competition will be something to behold. You don't have room to make mistakes with this level of competition! The wonderful nature of the club is that it is still very relaxed and friendly and beginning skippers are welcomed and given lots of encouragement.

RG 65 Nationals
Albuquerque, NM
Fourteen skippers braved unseasonably chilly Albuquerque weather and the usual high desert mixture of shifts, lulls and puffs to battle it out in the third annual Rio Grande Cup, which this year was combined with the RG-65 National Regatta. Eric Rosenbaum repeated his victory of last year and took home the Navajo silverwork cup as well as the chevrons. Technical high point was the arrival of the East coast boats designed by Bill Hagerup. Instead of scaling down an IOM, US1M or Marblehead, Bill had the idea of scaling up a successful Footy and equipping it with the McRig that is so popular in that class. This meant that three different kinds of rigs (conventional, swing, and McRig) were in contention, demonstrating that development is still active in the RG-65 class. Swing rigs took first and second, McRigs took third and fifth, and a conventional rig took fourth. Photographs and full results can be found on the Duke City Model Yacht Club site, www.dcmyc.org

What is in your regatta toolbox?
Ken Hall, scale schooner builder and sailor in the Midwest, is researching an article for Model Yachting on what spares, tools, and other stuff we bring to regattas. Here is Ken's draft list to start our mental processes. Please provide suggested adds, deletes, and other thoughts to Ken at kbhxo123@gmail.com.

2010 EC-12 Punta Gorda Regatta
The Punta Gorda Regatta was the last stop on the 2011 Florida circuit and was held Dec 4th and 5th. Going into the regatta, the leaders for the Florida Championship were very close with only 4 points separating the top 5 skippers and the top two, Tony Reich and Baron Bremer, by only 1 point.
The weather was forecast to be ideal and it turned out 13 races were held under mostly sunny skies. Saturday the winds were light and variable and ever changing. On Sunday the racing was started with light winds that built during the morning making it necessary for most to switch from A rigs to B. Twenty Four skippers started the P/R regatta with twenty two completing the two day event. The hosting club Sun Coast Model Sailing Club #211 did an excellent job of running the regatta under the direction of R.D. Art Hawes
The first five finishers were -Dick Hedderick 1st; Tony Rieck 2nd; John Bottensek 3rd; Baron Bremer 4th and Jack Wubbe 5th.
Full report and details will be available on the Florida 12 website soon. http://www.floridaec12.com/regattas.html
As usual, there are a bunch of Bob Greer's photos available.
