RC Laser North American Championship Jim Kaighan Defends his North American Title Lake Naomi, PA
Buchanan, Seidelmann, Lang, Lippincott, Kaighn | These are daily email updates from Class Secretary, Dave Branning...
Day one at the North Americans was terrific: Race committee first
class, hospitality wonderful and the weather in the sixties; winds at
the high end of the B sail in the puffs and the course was winds blowing
left to right with plenty of places to stand, view, and control your
Laser. This is definately, with wind, the best venue I have sailed for
RC Lasers. It's a shame that only 18 boats were able to make it. This is
a terrific venue. Jim Kaighan and Ryan Lippincott are tied for first on points
counting two throwouts. We have sailed 12 races with more tomorrow and
Sunday. Tomorrow will be warmer and less clouds and Sunday could bring
some rain showers so we want to get as much in the bag today and
tomorrow in case sunday is a wash out. In third is Hank Buchanan, with Robbie Seidelmann in fourth, 5
points behind Hank. Steve Lang is in 5th and three points behind
Steve are Jamie Betz and yours truly tied for 6th four points up on Nick
Mortgu in 8th. Harry is in 9th, 12 points out of 8th and Tom Lucky is
in 13th and roger Baldwin is in 16th. We have lots of sailing to go so we hope to improve on today. Off to the cocktail party and dinner....this is a nice sailing vacation. Watch Robbie Seidelmann, #137.... | ...as he port tacks the fleet!! | Day Two of three at the North Americans: Lake Naomi flukie winds showed up today as we went to full draft on
A sails for the entire day and seven races. But the sun and sky were
brilliant and the temps were in the 70's. Yesterday's glorious winds are
a memory as we laid out 3 different courses and used all three as the
winds moved up and down and left to right to left. Tested our patience
and the race committee's all day. At the top of the heap, Jim Kaighin, with six wins yesterday,
mustered only one today but sailed to 5 seconds and one fifth. Ryan
Lippincott also had one win today and remained in second five points
behind Jim Kaighin. In third, with a four win, 2 second and a third kind
of day, is Steve Lang, who jumped over Hank Buchanan and Rob
Seidelmann. Rob is in fourth, 3 points from 3rd and Hank is in 5th, two
points from Robbie. The Oxford team, after a pep talk, had some great moments today.
Harry won a race, added two seconds and a third, and otherwise sailed
very consistantly to move up a place to 8th. Dave had two firsts today,
stayed tied with Jamie Betz (who also won two today) for 7th, nine
points out of 5th. Tom Lucke ( a second and a third) and Roger Baldwin (
two thirds and a 4th) had chances to steal a couple of races but mother
nature shut them out. They remain in 13th and 16th respectively. Weather tomorrow is looking rainy so if we get one race in we get another throw out. The hosts are terrific. We had a great cocktail party and dinner
last night at a private residence club and lots of door prizes as we
bought a bunch of chances to support the local club. Tonight is a more
dressy cocktails and dinner at The Lake Naomi Yacht Club. La Dee Dah! Jim Kaighan defends his North American title: Day three of a three day championship concluded with Jim Kaighan,
of Marsh Harbor, holding off a gallant attack by Ryan Lippincott, who
had 3 firsts on the last day. Ryan also had two races that were two of
his 5 throwouts so he could not make up the difference on Jim. In the
end Jim sailed very effectively to win, by two points, his second North
American RC Laser title and his third major RC Laser regatta in a year. Ryan Lippincott was second, Steve Lang third, Rob Seidelmann forth,
and Hank Buchanan, fifth. Jamie Betz garnered sixth with two firsts on
the last day to hold off yours truly, who also had two firsts on the
day. Harry Henkel was 8th with Nick Mortgu 9th and Victor Oberg 10th
(Victor won a race and has been much improved in the past year). Tom
Lucke was 12th and Roger Baldwin 16th. In all we sailed 50 heats, odds and evens, so all competitors
sailed 25 races and had 5 throwouts for the three days. Ten different
individuals won races and 2 guys won eight races each. A little rain
greeted us this morning but with a 30 minute delay we sailed in 5-8
knots and no rain to get in 6 races on the day. The above pictures are from Beth Lippincott. Click here for the rest of the pictures.
