AMYA Bulletin
Volume 3, Edition 11
August 23, 2010
Greetings!

When you take a look at the regatta schedule at the bottom of the page, you'll notice the chevron colors are turning just like the leaves will be here soon.  There are a lot of red and gold chevron events coming up over the next couple months.  I hope you get to take part in some of them.

As always, thanks for reading.

  Let's Try Something Different

I am hosting a live online discussion on Monday, August 30th at 8PM EDT.  Everyone is welcome.

I'll be discussing the difference between the hobby side of the AMYA and the business side and why that difference is so important in this election.

My counterpart has been invited but has declined to speak to the membership using this system.  If he changes his mind, the invitation remains open.  His involvement would be beneficial to all.

The process to sign up is simple.  Just click here to be taken to the registration page.  Even if you can't be by your computer at this time, you can join in via your phone.

Bruce & Chuck

Alan Kew owns an armada of J's, which graciously loans out.  At Mystic this year, two of his boats skippered by Chuck Luscomb and Bruce Walton took top honors.

A Message for Pea Pod Sailors

Peapod Class sailors should be aware of the hazards attendant with the use

of any LiPo battery packs. For more info read the article on page 28, issue #160

of M/Y( our magazine). Especially important for Peapod class sailors since our boats

are primarily of all-wood construction with much epoxy in our joinery.

Most other class(es) do not frown on the use of these LiPo packs and admittedly

seven ounces, or more can be saved by using these products, however, the risk of a

fire is great if these packs are wetted. Recommend shaving weight in our development class

in other ways. Use aluminum beams in place of hardwoods, by installing small wood blocks

during build to attach your beams.

In closing, when these  new battery designs evolve, such as hermetically sealed Li-Ion types, then safety will then be assured. When purchasing these packs be aware that special voltage regulating chargers are required as well, or fatal battery collapse can result.

This is a Peapod Class alert only, at this time, since we do not desire to change our class rules if all our class members are responsible in battery pack use.
