John Davis, Model Yachting, Editor

The current issue of Model Yachting includes the Nominations and Motions that will be on the 2010 Ballot. We have two candidates for President and significant motions to change our Bylaws, as well as the J Class and Soling One Meter Class Rules. There are original comments included in the current issue of Model Yachting after each Nomination or Motion. If you want to comment on any of these Nominations or Motions, you can do so by sending me an e-mail before the June 26 Final Deadline for Issue 161. Send your e-mail to (myEditor@theAMYA.org), and put Ballot Comment, and the Nomination or Motion Number in the message Subject Line. Start the body text of your message with Comment: and I will copy your comment directly from your message and paste it so it follows the Nomination or Motion you are commenting on. Please include only one comment per message. If you want to comment on several ballot items, then send each comment in a separate message. Yes, I can be a bit dense, and this is the best way to assure I get your comments in the correct place. Your comments will be edited for grammar and spelling, and may be shortened if we are tight on space. We will print as much as we can.

12 Seawind sailors braved a storm riddled weather forecast and were rewarded with perfect weather for a weekend of terrific sailing to contest the Region 3 Seawind Championship held at GMYC in Greenville, SC.  The event took place May 21st through the 23rd and was contested through a total of 27 races.  Saturday saw a steady southerly breeze at Hartness Pond that provided excellent and very tactical racing.  The sailors enjoyed a relaxing catered barbecue by the lake Saturday evening.  Sunday's wind switched from the north and though it proved to be a little more variable, we saw extended periods of strong and steady breeze that rewarded proper boat tuning.

Mike Eades (Arizona) won the event through consistently high finishes with 7 1st place finishes and rarely posting a result outside of the top 5.  David Johnson (Asheville, NC) finished just behind in 2nd place with two 1st place finishes and a great deal of high finish consistency.  Jake Kohl (Greenville, SC) followed in 3rd place with 6 wins but less consistency.  Steve Lang and Nigel Pitt (Hartwell, GA) followed in 4th and 5th place respectively - Nigel Pitt did not contend in the last two races as he had to depart for a last minute flight to contend in a US Sailing Championship in Texas.

GMYC is a very new club in Greenville, SC and facility and we were excited to host the R3 championship this year.  Every single one of our 6 club members contributed selflessly to build the facilities and organize the event making it a really great time for all.  We have a great lake that provides terrific close and consistent racing conditions and have have already added two new members simply from the interest and visibility that the Region 3 championship provided.  We look forward to growing our club and hosting more AMYA events providing South Carolina fun, fellowship, and hospitality.

2010 Soling 50 National Championship

By Stan Ogden

The Bakersfield Model Yacht Club hosted the 2010 Soling 50 National Championship Regatta on May 22nd and 23rd. On Saturday, the winds ranged from 5 mph to almost 15 mph at times. There were dead spots on the pond at Riverlakes, and also there were occasional gusts, which caused many Soling 50s to precariously plane downwind with bows down. It was exciting racing with a few contacts and a couple of protests to the consternation for Ron Berg and Filippo Busalacchi. Richard French won 10 out of 14 heats on Saturday with a commanding lead at the end of the day.

On Sunday the winds were lighter, but the racing was just as fierce. Ken Campbell pressed and consistently beat Richard French, the leader on Saturday, but could not quite make up the difference. Richard won 3 and Ken won 5 first place finishes on Sunday, out of the final 10 heats. The other skippers winning first place finishes were Ty Beach 2, Filippo 2, and Kim Robbins 1.

The winner of the J.D. Vincent Craftsmanship Trophy for the most beautiful Soling 50 as determined and voted on by the skippers was Ron Berg with Soling 50  #65.  Ron's boat was red and white with a beautiful chrome strip down the side.

Regatta Director was Chris Staiger and Dave Ogden was an assistant and photographer.

Dennis Desprois edged Jay Barnes for the Championship as both sailors put on a clinic in sailing and preparation for the class. The State title wasn't decided until Dennis crossed the finish line first in the last race which ended up as a match race between the two veteran sailors. By virtue of winning the last race Dennis tied Jay for total points, firsts, seconds and won on the third tie breaker (ranked in the order of their scores in the last race)...more
