Sailing on the National Mall

The National Park Service is gathering suggestions for the "National Mall" in Washington DC. If you would like to be able to sail in the Reflecting Pool, or elsewhere in DC, you should write to www.nps.gov/nationalmallplan

So far the Park Service has noted  in Newsletter II that "requested recreational facilities include a playground, horse trails, an ice skating rink, a baseball diamond, picnic areas, and places to sail model boats."  The document also includes "rent model boats in Constitution Garden."

There may also be a requirement that an organization planning a gathering of more than 20 people obtain a permit.

There is also a small reflecting pool just west of the Capitol, and the tidal basin next to the Jefferson Memorial (which is often full of paddle boats) and one could sail  radio controlled boats off Haines Point which has the Potomac River on one side and a channel on the other.

The Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool is long and narrow. It is about 36 inches deep in the middle as is the pond in Constitution Garden, but the garden pond has lots of aquatic plants and both of these pools gather lots of leaves over the summer so the actual usable depth in dry summers can be a foot less. The nominal depth at the edges is about a foot.
