2010/11 SCC Chamber Music Series

Hello Everyone,

I am excited to announce the Southampton Cultural Center Chamber Music Series for 2010-2011! The series begins on Saturday, October 30 with the fantastic contemporary piano and percussion ensemble Yarn/Wire and finishes on Sunday, May 15 with the Annual Composers of the East End Concert.

In between, there is an incredible array of concerts from the Bryant Park String Quartet and the Southampton Cultural Center Chamber Players with Stony Brook University faculty pianist Christina Dahl to a full concert performance by Stony Brook Opera and Baroque Players of Handel's opera Acis and Galatea.

Listed below is the entire series schedule in three categories: SCC Chamber Players, Recitals and Stony Brook University Ensembles. At the bottom is a comprehensive list of all the concerts - be sure to add these dates to your calendar! Please note that three concerts are coming up very soon with Yarn/Wire on Saturday, October 30 at 7:00 PM, the Byrant Park String Quartet on Sunday, November 14 at 3:00 PM and the SCC Chamber Players on Sunday, November 28 at 3:00 PM.

Ticket prices this year are $20/$10 students. Season tickets for 11 concerts are available for $165 - that's 25% off the regular price. Tickets for the Benefit Concert on Sunday, May 1 will cost $50, but are only $40 if you purchase season tickets. Tickets are available online or at the door.  Credit cards will now be accepted at the door along with checks and cash.

Southampton Cultural Center Chamber Players
 The Southampton Cultural Center Chamber Players is a group of extraordinary musicians who are members of or have performed with such prestigious ensembles as the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Opera and Montreal Symphony and, between then, have been seen in virtually every major venue on the East Coast.

Annual Benefit Concert with Christina Dahl, piano

Christina Dahl, piano faculty at Stony Brook University, joins the SCC Chamber Players for a performance of the monumental Brahms piano quintet. Tickets: $50 ($40 for Season Ticket Holders)


Annual Composers of the East End Concert

The Annual Composers of the East End welcomes back composers Victoria Bond, Eric Salzman and Steven Dickman and new composer Bruce Wolosoff with music for violin, percussion and piano. With Dylan Benson, percussion.

Saturday, October 30 at 7:00 PM
Using two grand pianos and drums, xylophones, woodblocks, and gongs from around the world, Yarn/Wire creates sounds both delicate and immense. Featuring Leonard Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, an entertaining and exquisite tour de force, Yarn/Wire will grow your ears and leave you tapping your foot.

Bryant Park String Quartet

The Bryant Park String Quartet presents a varied program featuring works of Mozart, Shostakovich and Mendelssohn. The Quartet, in residence at Stony Brook University's Community Music program, was a prizewinner in the 2010 Hugo Kauder International Music Competition and performs regularly throughout the US.

 

Alistair MacRae, cello
Sunday, February 20 at 3:00 PM
Cellist Alistair MacRae presents a recital of music by J.S. Bach and Samuel Barber's sonata for cello and piano. Artistic Director of Fountain Ensemble, Mr. MacRae has performed in New York's top venues with many well-known collaborators including members of the Tokyo, Takacz and Emerson Quartets.

 

Trio KAVAK

Sunday, March 6 at 3:00 PM
Trio KAVAK presents Music out of Emptiness exploring music inspired by emptiness and silence. The selections feature unique color palettes and techniques which showcase the beautiful and haunting sound world of the flute, viola and harp combination. Works by Kaija Saariaho, Toru Takemitsu, Andrew McKenna Lee, Simon Holt, and Victor Lowrie.

 

Flying Forms
Saturday, March 12 at 7:00 PM
The exceptional period instrument ensemble Flying Forms is joined by lutenist Christopher Morrongiello for a program of Baroque classics by Bach, Biber, Corelli, Handel and more. Hear Baroque music as it was meant to be played in an intimate setting with historical copies of original instruments.

 

Soo Bae, cello
Sunday, March 27 at 3:00 PM
Cellist Soo Bae presents a recital for solo cello with music of J.S. Bach plus her own hymn arrangements. An acclaimed soloist who performs across the US, this charismatic Long Island native handles traditional and contemporary with extraordinary skill.

Handel's Acis and Galatea

The shepherd Acis loves the goddess Galatea.  Unfortunately for them both, the one-eyed monster, Polyphemus has his "eye" on Galatea.  Classic love triangle?  Who will have their way?  Can the lovers avert the monster's wrath?  Combine this dramatic plot with George Frederik Handel's enchanting one-act score, and you are in store for a delightful afternoon of music making.  Stony Brook University's opera workshop combines with the Stony Brook Baroque Players for this great musical event.

The ever-entertaining Contemporary Chamber Players are sure to please with performances of modern classics that make full use of a wide variety of percussion instruments. Come to see if CCP repeats the theatrics of their last visit where they placed drum sets throughout the hall surrounding the audience.
