Greetings! |
A colleague of mine mentioned to me that, while calling our office this week, he felt it was difficult to get through to my extension. In an effort to make contacting us easier, I want to make you aware that you can dial our extensions any time after the auto attendant picks up.
For example, once you hear our general greeting, if you dial "111" you will automatically get routed to my extension.
I hope this makes it a bit easier to get in touch whenever you wish to speak with us. |

Market Commentary |
Even though just 5% of Libya's oil exports are shipped to the USA, the brutal civil war that has broken out in this North African country has impacted the price of gas that Americans pay at the pumps. In just the last 7 days, the average price of unleaded gasoline nationwide has risen 18 ½ cents, reaching $3.35 a gallon yesterday (2/27/11). Economists fear that our economic recovery could stall if the rising price of oil (which closed at $97.88 a barrel last week) fuels inflation domestically (source: BTN Research). Famous stock investor Warren Buffett has played the role of cheerleader before. On 10/16/08 Buffet wrote his "Buy America, I Am" op-ed article in the New York Times, encouraging investors to "be fearful when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are fearful." Since Buffett penned his letter, the S&P 500 has gained +47.4% (total return) through the close of trading last Friday 2/25/11. Over this last weekend, Buffett released his annual letter to his firm's shareholders, telling nervous equity investors that he still believes America's best days are ahead. Buffett's oftentimes folksy humor typically contains the core of his contrarian discipline. He warns Americans that "no matter how serene today may be, tomorrow is always uncertain. Don't let that reality spook you" (source: Berkshire Hathaway). The countdown to the first federal government shutdown in 15 years is just 4 days away (3/04/11). Republicans want spending cuts for the current 2011 fiscal year, while Democrats favor a short-term 2-week extension at current spending levels so that further negotiations can take place (source: Congress). |
Notable Numbers |

1. BAD DAY - The S&P 500 lost 2.1% (total return) last Tuesday (2/22/11), its worst 1-day performance this year. There were only 10 trading days in 2010 (out of 252 total trading days) when the S&P 500 had a larger decline for the day, most recently on 8/11/10. The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index of 500 widely held stocks that is generally considered representative of the US stock market (source: BTN Research).
2. BORROWING MAXIMUM - The US debt ceiling is currently $14.3 trillion. This self-imposed limit on our country's ability to borrow funds has been increased by Congress 80 times since 1940, most recently in February 2010 (source: Congress).
3. OWN vs. RENT - There are twice as many households that own homes (74.8 million) as there are households that rent a home or an apartment (37.7 million) as of 12/31/10 (source: HUD).
4. THE BIG APPLE - Under current law, a New York City firefighter or police officer can collect a full pension after 20 years on the job regardless of age (source: New York Times). |
