Greetings!
JP Bio Pic

Here's your tip for the week - Encourage your youngster to start investing NOW.  It's never too early to start investing, so perhaps you can help your youngster get started. This doesn't mean setting up an account they don't even know about and making all of the decisions for them. Instead, help them do some research, meet with a financial advisor and make decisions. More and more of my clients are bringing their children and grandchildren in to meet with me and learn about investing. Please feel free to call and I will share a few ideas for getting your youngster interested in investing.

Market Commentary

When is inflation too low?  Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke believes that time is now.  The nation's top central banker revealed his plans to bring back some level of inflation, a move that may confuse many Americans.  Bernanke feels that some consumers are delaying major purchases on the belief that prices may fall in the near term to lower levels.  His carefully picked comments from last week were likely designed to encourage Americans to spend and borrow money now, not later when higher inflation may have pushed prices higher.  Just exactly how the Federal Reserve intends to accomplish all this is still under wraps.  The Fed next meets in 2 weeks (source: Federal Reserve).

The S&P 500 reached its highest level in 5 ½ months last week, finishing trading on Friday (10/15/10) at 1176, up +7.2% YTD (total return) and up +3.1% since the beginning of October.  This comes on the heels of September's +8.9% advance, the index's 5th best monthly gain since 1990.  The top performing quarter for the S&P 500 in the last 20 years (i.e., 1990-2009) has been the 4th quarter (October-November-December), up +4.6% (total return) on average (source: BTN Research).

Global currency conflicts are impacting more than just the USA and China.  Many other foreign countries that depend upon exports (including Thailand, Australia, Singapore and South Korea) have seen their local currency rise as interest rates in the USA have fallen to record low levels.  A rising currency in an export-driven economy is a recipe for disaster (source: BTN Research).

Notable Numbers

1.     TARGET- The Federal Reserve considers an unemployment rate of 5.0% to 6.3% to be "full employment," i.e., 5.0% to 6.3% of out-of-work Americans that are temporarily seeking new employment (source: Federal Reserve).

2.     TOP ONE PERCENT - Based upon 2008 tax data, it took an adjusted gross income of $380,000 to rank in the top 1% of US taxpayers, a group that paid 38% of all federal income tax for the year.  In 1980, the top 1% of taxpayers paid 19% of all federal income tax (source: Internal Revenue Service).

3.     NOTHING TO PAY - Americans filed 140 million tax returns for calendar year 2008 income.  Through the use of deductions, exemptions and credits, 52 million tax returns of the 140 million total returns (or 37% of all returns filed) paid zero federal income tax (source: Internal Revenue Service).

4.     IN CASE OF DEATH- 3 out of every 10 American households own no life insurance on any family member (source: LIMRA).

A. Seminars, speaking as sales meetings, coaching, and consulting.

Q. What areas do you cover?
A. The entire sales process: getting through to clients; how to prepare for a meeting; how to engage to build trust; how to have a sales conversation that develops opportunities for the maximum amount of appropriate business; how to present a story that sells; how to work through concerns and move to a close or the next step in the process.

Q. What is your Phone #?
A. 212 876 1875

Q. Do you have a Website/ Email?
A. Yes, www.annemiller.com
 amiller@annemiller.com

A. Yes. The newest one just published is "Make What You Say Pay!' The previous ones are "Metaphorically Selling," "365 Sales Tips for Winning  Business," and "Presentation Jazz!"

Q. Why do people choose to work with you?

A. I wanted to know that as well, so I asked. One person summed it up very well. He said, "You get me to think."  In today's fast-moving, information overloaded world, where buyers have many choices and are more sophisticated than they were years ago, the savviest salespeople need to be more strategic and creative than ever before.  My mantra "Engage mind before mouth" pays off in increased business.

Q. What do you do?
A. I help people sell their services professionally and strategically to ensure long-term, high pay-off business for them. That takes the form of seminars, speaking at sales meetings, and individual coaching.
