Greetings!

Here is your weekly tip - Sometimes failure is a lesson well learned. I can remember when my son was a lot younger; he wanted a new game for his video game system. I knew it was a game he wouldn't enjoy because it was too complicated for him. He refused to listen to logic and insisted that he wanted the game. In order to teach him a lesson, I let him have the game if he was willing to pay for it out of his savings. Of course he was quite willing to buy it. About an hour and a half after he got it home he confessed that he did not like the game at all. Rather than being a big softy and running out to buy him something he would enjoy, I kept my mouth shut. About a week later, he asked if I could take him to the store and buy him a new game. I asked if he had the money. He confessed he did not have enough money and wanted to borrow the difference from me. I took this as an opportunity to teach him a lesson. I explained I did not have the extra money to help him, and had he not rushed in to the first game, he would have had the money available. It seemed he learned the lesson. From that point on, he has learned to do his research and test a game at a friend's before he spends his money.  I guess, sometimes, letting our loved ones make a mistake and not bailing them out can prove to be a valuable lesson.

If the size of the US government seems to be larger than ever, then you will be pleased to learn that Uncle Sam has shed 492,000 employees in the last 3 months (July-August-September), although many of these individuals were part-time census workers.  Even better news is that over the same 3-month period, the private sector has added 274,000 new workers.  The sobering reality however is that our country still has a 9.6% unemployment rate and 14.8 million out-of-work citizens (source: Department of Labor).

The first of what may be multiple challenges to the new federal requirement that all Americans must have health insurance coverage has gone in favor of the government.  A Federal judge in Detroit ruled last Thursday (10/07/10) that the insurance mandate (which will be the law of the land in calendar year 2014) is legal (source: AP).

The Federal Reserve wants Americans to save less and to spend more today, even if that spending is with borrowed dollars.  Their year-long program (that ended in March 2010) of buying $1.7 trillion of Treasury debt succeeded in driving up bond prices and driving down interest rates, but failed to sufficiently jump-start the economy.  The Fed is trying to decide if another round of massive bond buying will produce the desired effect this time.  The debate among Fed officials will continue at its next scheduled meeting set for early November (source: Federal Reserve).

 Notable Numbers

1. DÉJÀ VU? - Democrat Bill Clinton won the US presidential election in 1992, entering the White House in January 1993.  Democrats controlled the House and the Senate in 1993 and 1994 before losing control of both to the Republicans in the 1994 mid-term elections.  The S&P 500 gained +1.3% (total return) in 1994 but bounced back with a +37.6% return in 1995.  The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index of 500 widely held stocks that is generally considered representative of the US stock market (source: BTN Research).

2.     HIGHEST EVER - The S&P 500 closed at its highest value ever (1565.15) on 10/09/07 or 3 years ago.  The stock index closed at 1165.15 last Friday 10/08/10, exactly 400 points below its record close (source: BTN Research).

3.     BIG STOCK - Since the end of 1982, only 4 stocks have been ranked # 1 at the end of the year as the largest capitalized stock in the S&P 500 index.  1 of these 4 stocks is again leading the way as of 9/30/10 (source: S&P).

4.     THANKS DAD

- Bill Gates is ranked # 1 as the richest American today ($54 billion), but the 6 living heirs of Sam Walton (who died in 1992) are worth a combined $90 billion today (source: Forbes).

A. Seminars, speaking as sales meetings, coaching, and consulting.

Q. What areas do you cover?
A. The entire sales process: getting through to clients; how to prepare for a meeting; how to engage to build trust; how to have a sales conversation that develops opportunities for the maximum amount of appropriate business; how to present a story that sells; how to work through concerns and move to a close or the next step in the process.

Q. What is your Phone #?
A. 212 876 1875

Q. Do you have a Website/ Email?
A. Yes, www.annemiller.com
 amiller@annemiller.com

Q. Have you written any books?
A. Yes. The newest one just published is "Make What You Say Pay!' The previous ones are "Metaphorically Selling," "365 Sales Tips for Winning  Business," and "Presentation Jazz!"

Q. Why do people choose to work with you?

A. I wanted to know that as well, so I asked. One person summed it up very well. He said, "You get me to think."  In today's fast-moving, information overloaded world, where buyers have many choices and are more sophisticated than they were years ago, the savviest salespeople need to be more strategic and creative than ever before.  My mantra "Engage mind before mouth" pays off in increased business.

Q. What do you do?
A. I help people sell their services professionally and strategically to ensure long-term, high pay-off business for them. That takes the form of seminars, speaking at sales meetings, and individual coaching.
