Here is your weekly tip - Let's talk MONEY. Guess what the #1 taboo subject around the American dinner table is? That's right, MONEY! Think about your dinner table growing up. Other than your parents telling you that the request du jour was "too expensive" and being reminded that "money does not grow on trees", there were no financial conversations. Perhaps your parents would allow some financial banter as they would lament the cost of your college education. I remember all too well, that's how it was in the Pink house.

So, what to do? Well, start to talk to the young folks in your life about money.

Here's a brief list of a few subjects, in no particular order, to get you started:
  • Saving/ investing
  • The overall cost of things (and the fact that those costs continue to rise)*
    • Cost of food
    • Cost of a family vacation
    • Cost of a college education
    • Cost of a family dinner out
    • Cost of clothes
      •  Especially designer clothing/ apparel
    • Cost of Video games/ entertainment
  • Financial priorities
  • Budgeting
  • Financial planning (yes, even youngsters should learn to plan for the things they want to own. You might just create a discipline that might last for generations to come).
  • Bring your youngsters to meet with a financial professional (more about this another week).

*When talking about the cost of things, I have found it effective to compare the cost of an item to a young person's earnings. For example, if your youngster earns $8.00 p/ Hr. & wants to purchase an item costing $70.00, explain that they will have to put in 8 ¾ hours of work to make that purchase. If you are also teaching your youngster to save a percentage of their earnings (a tip for another week) they will now have to put in even more time working before they can go shopping. You might even want to point out how many of their work hours it would take to put food on the family table for a week.

September 16th is "National Money Night Talk" www.MoneyNightTalk.com this is a great opportunity to get the ball rolling. Good luck.

Market Commentary

Somebody forgot to tell the US stock market that September has not been kind to equities for the last 2 decades.  Over the last 20 years (i.e., 1990-2009), September has been the worst performing month for the S&P 500, losing 0.7% on average.  But as of last Friday (9/10/10), the first 7 trading days of September this year has generated a +5.8% total return, a result better than any full-September performance since 1998 or a dozen years ago (source: BTN Research).

Congress has been out of session for the last 5 weeks, returning to its business in Washington today (9/13/10).  The job approval rating of Congress fell to 19% in mid-August 2010, near its all-time low of 14% from July 2008.  All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 37 of the 100 jobs in the Senate will be determined by the 11/02/10 mid-term elections which are now just 50 days away (source: Gallup).

President Barack Obama was very clear last week where he stands on the expiring Bush tax cuts.  In a speech last Wednesday (9/08/10) in Cleveland, the president continued to support the 2003 tax cuts for 98% of Americans.  Obama believes that couples earning at least $250,000 and single individuals making at least $200,000 (i.e., the top 2% of US taxpayers) should see an increase in their federal income taxes beginning in 2011 because giving tax cuts to "millionaires and billionaires" does not stimulate growth in the economy (source: White House).
 Notable Numbers

1.      STOCK VALUES -
As of last Friday (9/10/10), the total market capitalization of the S&P 500 was $10.06 trillion.  As of 9/30/00 (i.e., nearly 10 years ago), the total market capitalization of the S&P 500 was $12.60 trillion.  The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index of 500 widely held stocks that is generally considered representative of the US stock market (source: S&P, BTN Research).

2.     STUNNING TRADING VOLUME - Currency markets trade an average volume of $4 trillion every day around the world.  85% of the $4 trillion involves trades with the US dollar (source: Bank for International Settlements).

3.     REVENUE IS DOWN - Tax receipts expected to be collected by the government during fiscal year 2010 (i.e., the 12 months ending 9/30/10) are equal to 14.8% of the size of the economy (i.e., GDP), the lowest percentage that tax receipts have been as a percentage of GDP since 1950 or 60 years ago.  Gross Domestic Product is the annual market value of all goods and services produced domestically by the US (source:  White House).

4.     BLAME IT ON THE GLOBAL CRISIS - The public debt levels of the G-7 countries (i.e., Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK and the USA) has increased from 35% of GDP in 1974, to 80% of GDP in 2007, to 110% of GDP in 2010.  Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the annual market value of all goods and services produced domestically by a country (source:  International Monetary Fund, Carlo Cottarelli).

Q. What is Kidville?
A. Kidville is a place for families to go relax in a safe, clean and educational environment for their young children. We offer a range of classes for newborns through six year olds.

Q. Does Kidville offer anything more than the classes you just mentioned?
A. Absolutely, Kidville features an indoor Playspace, a retail boutique, and birthday parties for children up to age nine.

Q. Do I need to have a membership or anything like that? If so, what is the cost?
A. Membership is free with enrollment of a class.

Q. What sets your Kidville apart from other places I can take my children?
A. Quality. I am a Teacher first and a business owner second.

Q. Please tell me what that means.
A. I am a NYS certified teacher; I received my Masters degree from Iona College in early childhood education. I have taught 1st grade in both the Bronx and Bronxville public school systems. I take teaching the children that come to my facility very seriously. Children learn when they're having fun. Therefore we blend lessons and playtime together. Most of the children don't even realize they're learning. It's so much fun to watch.

Q. What else goes on at Kidville?
A. Well, even though it's not a formal part of the program, parents seem to find our store a great place to network with other parents. There have been discussions from which animal crackers taste the best to what's new @ the Zoo.

Q. What is the Playspace?
A. Playspace is open playtime, no classes. Just time to let the children play and explore while being supervised without the class structure. Please be sure to check our website to see what hours we are currently offering Playspace times
