Greetings!

Here is the
Tip of the week

Keep Good Records - If you don't keep good records, chances are you're not claiming all of your allowable income tax deductions and credits. Set up a system and use it all year long. It's much easier than scrambling to find everything at tax time, only to end up missing items that might have saved you money.

Conference Committee Chairman Barney Frank was committed to delivering a compromise bill on financial regulatory reform to Congress before the 4th of July recess and he did just that.  After working through the night last Thursday (6/24/10) into the early hours of the next morning, a final bill was voted on at 5:40 a.m. ET Friday.  The legislation will force banks to spin off part of their derivative business (as was expected), and also includes a severe proprietary trading ban on deposit-taking banks, new conflict of interest rules and a $19 billion tax on the financial services industry.  The latter provision has been described as a payback from the many companies that have been blamed for causing our nationwide financial crisis in the first place.  The House and the Senate will vote on the revised bill next week (source: Congress).

4 out of 5 Americans today (80%) disapprove of the way Congress is doing its job.  That number is down slightly from the near record 84% that gave Congress a "thumbs-down" in mid-March earlier this year (source: Gallup Poll).

The government has been tracking home mortgage interest rates for nearly 40 years.  Last week's average rate on a 30-year fixed rate mortgage dropped to 4.69%, the lowest level ever recorded.  Long-time real estate observers remember rates being this low in the 1950s when mortgages were just 20 or 25 years in length (source: Freddie Mac).

Notable Numbers

1.     SIX MONTHS - The second half of the year (i.e., July-December) has outperformed the first half of the year (i.e., January-June) for the S&P 500 on a total return basis during 7 of the last 10 years.  The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index of 500 widely held stocks that is generally considered representative of the US stock market (source: BTN Research).

2.     MAY NOT BE AS LARGE - For the last 5 years, Congress has reported that the Chinese currency renminbi is undervalued by as much as 40%, providing an unfair advantage to Chinese exporters and a financial headwind for US exporters.  A study released earlier this month by a US research institution reduced the level of estimated undervaluation for the renminbi to 24% (source: Peterson Institution for International Economics).

3.     BETTER THAN EXPECTED - The US government had anticipated that it would be able to borrow money through the sale of 10-year Treasury notes during the 2010 calendar year at an average yield of 3.90%.  The yield on the 10-year Treasury note ended 2009 at 3.84% but has fallen to 3.10% by last Friday 6/25/10 (source: Office of Management and Budget).

4.     BILLIONS - Using the Treasury Department's projection of $3.72 trillion of spending, the US government is anticipating spending of $10.2 billion every day during fiscal year 2010 (i.e., the 12 months ending 9/30/10).  There are 371 Americans (out of our total population of 310 million) that are worth at least $1 billion.  1 billion seconds is equal to 31 years, 8 ½ months (source: Treasury Department, Forbes).
