Greetings!
JP Bio Pic
I am happy to report that I have noticed a change lately. I have noticed that people seem to be more focused on getting their financial lives in order. We have been fortunate to start working with several new families. I think with economic news starting to get better and the markets continuing to make gains, people are getting back to taking a more active role in reaching their financial goals. If you, or anyone you know, would like to come in and chat with us about investments, financial planning or insurance, we would love to schedule a visit.

I hope you have a great week.

Market Commentary

President Obama traveled to New York City on Thursday (4/22/10) to do a little bit of cheerleading for financial regulatory reform, a little bit of scolding of Wall Street, and a whole lot of pounding on the bully pulpit that only the White House can provide.  Obama called the pending legislation as containing "updated, commonsense" regulations that are necessary to avoid a repeat of the failings of Wall Street in 2008.  Senate Democrats need just a single Republican vote (they need 60 votes in total) to move forward and bring the bill to debate on the floor of the Senate.  The key sticking point is a $50 billion industry-funded pot that would be used when necessary to pay for the orderly break-up of failing financial companies.  Republicans have argued that the creation of such a fund reinforces (rather than diminish) the concept of "too big to fail" (source: Senate).

The S&P 500 closed at 1217 last Friday (4/23/10), a calendar year 2010 high.  The stock index is up +9.8% YTD (total return).  29 of the last 50 calendar years have produced at least a +10% total return for the S&P 500 (source: BTN Research).

Beginning this Thursday (4/29/10), any airline that keeps flying passengers sitting on an airport tarmac for more than 3 hours face a maximum $27,500 per person fine.  The new government rule also requires the airlines to provide workable bathrooms, medical care, food and water after just 2 hours of waiting.  Critics of the rule predict that airlines will cancel more flights in the future than in the past to avoid monetary penalties (source: Transportation Department).

Notable Numbers

1.     BULL MARKET DURATION -
The bottom of the bear market (and thus the start of a bull market) for the S&P 500 occurred 13 ½ months ago on 3/09/09.  In the last 50 years (i.e., since 1960), the average bull market for the S&P 500 has lasted 55 months.  The shortest bull market in the last half century stretched over a 26-month period during 1966-68.  The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index of 500 widely held stocks that is generally considered representative of the US stock market (source: BTN Research).

2.     VERY RARE - There are 306 Americans worth at least $1.4 billion.  There are 309 million American citizens.  Thus, 1 out of every 1 million Americans is worth at least $1.4 billion (source: Forbes).

3.     TWICE AS MUCH - For the 17 years from 1965-1981, the top individual marginal tax bracket paid by American taxpayers was 70%, double the 35% top rate for 2010 (source: Internal Revenue Service).

4.     PROGRESS - 45,000 manufacturing jobs were created in the USA during the 1st quarter of 2010.  606,000 manufacturing jobs were eliminated during the 1st quarter of 2009 (source: Department of Labor).

Q. How did the restaurant get started?
A. My father Dom & my uncle Vinnie opened a pizzeria/restaurant in Ardsley in 1971. Ardsley Pizzeria served pizza in the front and had a small restaurant in the back. My Mom, Maria and Aunt, Ida, ran the kitchen in the back while Dom & Vinnie made pizza in the front. They sold in 1985 and set up shop in the current location in Yonkers.  I took over my father's share of the restaurant around 1996 after finishing Law School at Fordham University. I was only supposed to be here on a temporary basis but I absolutely fell in love with the customers and the business. Although my partner (and cousin) Mike and I run the business now, we keep our parents involved. They're great to turn to for "old fashioned guidance and advice". They also come in every morning and help. My father comes in and bakes all of the breads while my mother makes the pastries every morning.

Q. What changes are you most proud of?
A. Keeping the quality and flavor of our foods while modernizing the behind the scenes operations, such as adding a website and delivery on the weekends.
