Weekly Market Review |
Greetings!
The J. Pink Associates team wishes you Peace, Love and Joy during the holiday season and always. Thank you for being a part of our family. |
US stock investors may have many reasons to be thankful during this 2009 holiday season, not the least of which is a +25.0% YTD performance for the S&P 500 on a total return basis. It's not hard to believe that few, if any, prognosticators on 3/09/09 (i.e., 9 ½ months ago), looking at an S&P 500 that was down 24.6% YTD, envisioned that a +66% rebound was just beginning (source: BTN Research).
Americans believe, rightly or wrongly, that our nation still may experience significant economic troubles in 2010. As President Obama was taking office in January of this year, 59% of Americans surveyed felt the country was "on the wrong track." Now, almost a year later, the percentage of pessimistic Americans has climbed back up to 55%, its highest level since the inauguration. In spite of the nation's negative view of its future, the unemployment rate fell in 36 US states in November and rose in just 8 states (source: NBC/Wall Street Journal telephone poll, DOL). OPEC's final meeting of 2009 will take place in Angola on Tuesday (12/22/09). Saudi Arabia's oil minister declared that today's oil price ($73.36 a barrel) was "perfect." Global demand for oil is projected to be 86.3 million barrels a day in 2010, up +1.7% from 2009 (source: International Energy Agency). |
Notable Numbers
1. NOT THE FIRST - One of President-elect Obama's campaign pledges is to implement universal health care, an effort first undertaken by President Theodore Roosevelt more than 100 years ago (source: Newsweek, January 2009). 2. PRECURSOR TO AN UP YEAR? - The Pittsburgh Steelers won their 6th Super Bowl when they defeated the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 in Super Bowl # 43 on 2/01/09. In the 5 previous years that the Steelers won the Super Bowl (1975, 1976, 1979, 1980 and 2006), the S&P 500 has been up an average of +25.6% on a total return basis. The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index of 500 widely held stocks that is generally considered representative of the US stock market (source: BTN Research, February 2009). 3. NOT HAPPY - A weekly survey of stock investors indicated 70% of them were bearish as of 3/04/09, the highest bearish measurement ever recorded by this study. The 2007-09 bear market bottomed just 5 days later on 3/09/09 (source: American Association of Individual Investors, March 2009). 4. BIG APPETITE - The USA consumes as much oil per day as does the next 5 largest oil-consuming countries in the world combined (US Energy Information Administration, Wall Street Journal, March 2009). |
As always, if there's anything we can help you with, please feel free to call the office anytime.
I hope you have a great week.
Sincerely,
John John W. Pink, Sr. J. Pink Associates, Inc., Financial Advisors
