Weekly Market Review |
Greetings!
I hope you had a relaxing weekend and are enjoying the beginning of autumn.
I will be starting to receive statements in the office for the close of the third quarter. Please call or email us so we can set up a time to do a quarterly review. Please remember we can always do our meeting via Webex (you can see my reports on your computer screen).
I look forward to catching up with you soon. |
The S&P 500 stock index finished the 3rd quarter on a high note last Wednesday, gaining +15.6% (total return) for the period. That result was the best 3rd quarter performance (i.e., July-August-September) since 1970 and stands as the 2nd best gain achieved over any consecutive 3-month period during the last 10 ½ years. Investors were reminded just how fragile equity valuations can be however, as the stock index stumbled on Thursday and Friday (the first 2 days of October), losing 3.0% (source: BTN Research). The late week drop in stock prices wasn't helped by the news that our nation's unemployment rate hit a 26-year high in September. The increase in job losses nationwide has led thousands of laid off Americans in their 60s to apply for early retirement benefits from Social Security. The likelihood of a high unemployment rate in the near future has prompted the government to project a Social Security deficit for both 2010 ($10 billion) and 2011 ($9 billion). The last year in which Social Security paid out more than they took in was 1983 (source: Social Security Administration). The US Supreme Court begins its 2009-10 term today. Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor takes her place on the 9-member court as its 111th justice in history and only the 3rd female but the first Latino. John Roberts begins his 5th year as Chief Justice. John Paul Stevens, appointed by President Ford in 1975, is the court's oldest member at age 89 (source: Supreme Court). |
Notable Numbers
1. THE STREAK - The S&P 500 gained +3.7% (total return) for the month of September 2009, its 7th consecutive advancing month (i.e., March-September). Over the 7-month run, the stock index has gained +45.8%. The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index of 500 widely held stocks that is generally considered representative of the US stock market (source: BTN Research). 2. SAVING LESS - The personal savings rate in the USA at the end of August 2009 was 3.0%, the 3rd consecutive month the rate has declined (source: Commerce Department). 3. TAXES - The last time the IRS raised its top marginal tax bracket paid by individual taxpayers was in 1993. The top marginal tax bracket of 31% from 1992 was raised to 39.6% in 1993. The top bracket has been 35% since 2003 (source: IRS). 4. NOT WORKING - The unemployment rate in metropolitan Detroit is 17.0%. The national unemployment rate is 9.8%, its highest level since 1983 (source: Michigan Department of Labor, DOL). |
As always, if there's anything we can help you with, please feel free to call the office anytime.
I hope you have a great week.
Sincerely,
John John W. Pink, Sr. J. Pink Associates, Inc., Financial Advisors
