Weekly Market Review
Greetings!

CS from NY wrote in asking;

Q. John, you mentioned in last week's email that you would help me do a review of my insurance. Does that include my Insurance through work? What about my disability insurance? Also, can I talk to you about Long Term Care Insurance at the same time?

A. Yes I would be happy to discuss all of your family's insurance, except for your P&C (homeowners, auto, umbrella ...) as I am not licensed to handle those lines of coverage. I would love to help you review any personally owned and/or coverage through your work. It's important to do a review at least once per year. One of the most common problems I uncover is that the beneficiary designation is not reflective of your current wishes. This can be a real problem if left un-corrected.

Also, you never have to wait for something like life insurance awareness month to come along. I'm here to help and answer questions anytime you need me.

Please send in your questions anytime.
Market Commentary

The Federal Reserve announced in March that it intended to spend $300 billion to buy long-term government bonds over the 6 months through September, a plan designed to boost the price of Treasuries and drive down interest rates.  Following its 2-day meeting last week, the Fed indicated the program, which had reached $253 billion in purchases, will shut down at the end of October, a month later than originally scheduled.  The stock and bond markets interpreted the Fed's action as a sign of confidence in an economy that no longer required an emergency rescue (source: Federal Reserve).

The government has already spent more money during the 2009 fiscal year ($3.0 trillion) than the country did during any other year in history and there are still 2 months yet to go.  The 5 largest monthly deficits in US history have occurred during the current fiscal year, a 12-month period that began on 10/01/08 (source: Treasury Department).

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke will reflect on a turbulent year for the global economy when he speaks on Friday at an annual conference held in Jackson Hole, WY.  It was at this gathering 2 years ago that Bernanke said "it is not the responsibility of the Federal Reserve--nor would it be appropriate--to protect lenders and investors from the consequences of their financial decisions" (source: International Business Times).
Notable Numbers

1.     HIGH-SPEED -
From its 3/09/09 bear market closing low, it took the S&P 500 only 5 months to bounce back and gain +49.7% as of last Thursday (8/13/09).  The return calculation was based upon the change of the raw index and does not include the impact of reinvested dividends.  The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index of 500 widely held stocks that is generally considered representative of the US stock market (source: BTN Research).

2.     A LOT MORE - With 2 months remaining in fiscal year 2009 (i.e., 10/01/08 to 9/30/09), the government is projecting spending of $4.0 trillion for the 12-month period.  During fiscal year 2001 (i.e., the first fiscal year during the presidency of George Bush # 43), total government spending was $1.9 trillion (source: Treasury Department).

3.     TOP ONE PERCENT - To rank in the top 1% of all US taxpayers required an adjusted gross income (AGI) level of at least $410,000 based upon calendar year 2007 tax data.  This group earned 23% of all AGI nationwide and paid 40% of all federal income tax in the country (source: Internal Revenue Service, Tax Foundation).

4.     STILL COVERED - 21 states allow young adults to qualify for health insurance coverage under their parents' insurance plans through at least age 25 (source: Commonwealth Fund).
As always, if there's anything we can help you with, please feel free to call the office anytime.

I hope you have a great week.

Sincerely,

John
