Weekly Market Review |
Greetings!
Did you know that September is Life Insurance awareness month? With only a few weeks to go before September arrives, I thought it would be a good idea for you and I to do a review of your current insurance program. Actually, I think EVERYBODY should do a review of their insurance program at least once per year.
In today's insurance market, costs are leveling (or even going down) partially due to longer life expectancy. Therefore, it just makes sense to do a review and be sure that you are paying as little as possible for the coverage you have. We should also be sure that you don't have more coverage than you need (or for that matter, less than you need). Over the next few weeks please try to locate your current policy(ies) so we can discuss/review it/them in September.
In the meantime, enjoy the summer! |
The release of better than expected jobs data on Friday pushed the US stock market to its highest levels of 2009 as investors remained optimistic rather than dwelling on the economic difficulties of the past year. In spite of news from a government report that 247,000 employees lost jobs nationwide in July, the overall number of unemployed Americans fell to 14.5 million. The country's current unemployment rate of 9.4% (down 0.1% from a month earlier) was also welcomed news, its first month-over-month drop since April 2008 (source: Department of Labor). The S&P 500, which had closed above 1000 on Monday for the first time since President Barack Obama's November 2008 election, finished last week at 1010. The stock index is up +13.6% YTD (total return) but more remarkably, has gained +50.8% in just the last 5 months. Over that 5-month period, the S&P 500 has added $3 trillion of value to the accounts of equity investors (source: BTN Research). If our recession, which began in December 2007, isn't officially over, investors are making a strong case that it may have run its course. The Federal Reserve will hold its 5th scheduled meeting of 2009 this week and may add to the country's optimism when it releases its summary statement on Wednesday afternoon. The Fed funds futures market is priced to reflect a 100% probability that the Fed will leave short-term interest rates unchanged at this meeting, matching its action following each of the 4 previous 2009 meetings (source: Federal Reserve). |
Notable Numbers
1. A TRILLION DOLLARS - The S&P 500 stock index had a total market capitalization of $7.87 trillion as of 12/31/08. The stock index reached a peak closing value for this year of $8.88 trillion as of last Friday (8/07/09), an increase of $1 trillion YTD. The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index of 500 widely held stocks that is generally considered representative of the US stock market (source: S&P). 2. JUST TWO STATES - 43% of the foreclosure filings reported on properties nationwide in the first half of 2009 occurred in California and Florida (source: RealtyTrac). 3. STATUS QUO - Only 1 out of every 6 Americans with a pre-tax retirement account (e.g., 401(k) plan) changed his/her investment selections in calendar year 2008 (source: Kiplinger Personal Finance). 4. LONG HOURS - 7.4% of Americans work at least 60 hours a week. 17.7% of workers put in at least 49 hours of work each week (source: Census Bureau, Statistical Abstract of the United States, Table 582). |
As always, if there's anything we can help you with, please feel free to call the office anytime.
I hope you have a great week.
Sincerely,
John John W. Pink, Sr. J. Pink Associates, Inc., Financial Advisors
