Weekly Market Review |
Greetings!
I will be out of the office this coming Thursday & Friday. However, I will have limited access to voicemail and email so feel free to contact me if there's anything you need.
I hope you have a great week and enjoy the summer weather. |
The S&P 500 has tried its best to make up for lost time recently. The stock index has gained +11.4% over the last 2 trading weeks, a performance that has been bested only 3 times since 1950. After dropping to a bear market low on 3/09/09, the S&P 500 has bounced back with a near +45% advance (source: BTN Research). Everyone in Washington had the same question for Ben Bernanke last week as the Fed Chairman testified before Congress: how will he manage the Fed's exit strategy as they ultimately unwind their extraordinary stimulus actions of the last 10 months? Bernanke acknowledged that his biggest concern is supervising this reversal without inflicting any inflationary side effects on the US economy. How well Bernanke performs this task may have an impact on President Obama's decision to reappoint him or not for a 2nd 4-year term as chairman. Bernanke's current term ends on 1/31/10 or 6 months from Friday (source: Federal Reserve). The nation's gross domestic product (GDP) has declined for 3 consecutive quarters through 3/31/09, a negative streak that last occurred 34 years ago. The initial report on GDP growth or decline for the 2nd quarter will be reported on Friday. GDP is the annual market value of all goods and services produced domestically by the US (source: Commerce Department). |
Notable Numbers
1. 1,000 - The last trading day when the S&P 500 closed at 1000 or higher was on Tuesday 11/04/08, the day Barack Obama was elected President. The stock index closed last week at 979. The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index of 500 widely held stocks that is generally considered representative of the US stock market (source: BTN Research). 2. WORKING FOR YOURSELF - The average net worth of American families headed by a person that is an employee of a firm (i.e., not a business owner) is $352,000. The average net worth of American families headed by a self-employed person is $1.96 million. This data is part of the 2007 Survey of Consumer Finances collected by the Federal Reserve and was released in June 2009 (source: Federal Reserve). 3. WHAT, ME WORRY?! - 45% of retirees aged 55-75 surveyed in April 2009 have either not calculated how long their assets are anticipated to last during their retirement years or they have never given the issue any thought (source: Society of Actuaries). 4. NOT MUCH HAS CHANGED - The production of crude oil that occurs in the USA today (5.0 million barrels a day) is the same level of domestic production as it was in 1949 or 60 years ago (source: DOE). |
As always, if there's anything we can help you with, please feel free to call the office anytime.
I hope you have a great week.
Sincerely,
John John W. Pink, Sr. J. Pink Associates, Inc., Financial Advisors
