Weekly Market Review |
Greetings!
TP from NY wrote in; Q. John, is there any way for me to know what my Social Security benefit will be once I retire?
A. There are ways for you to ESTIMATE what you benefit will be. Unfortunately, nothing is set in stone.
- The most accurate estimate will be the statement you get in the mail, roughly 90 days before your birthday each year, directly from Social Security. It's very important that you open this statement as soon as it arrives. You should check your reported earnings for the previous tax year for accuracy (sometimes numbers are not entered correctly) if there is a discrepancy, you only have a short time correct this information. Otherwise there is nothing you can do and that could cost you in the long run.
- You can also go to the Social Security website www.SocialSecurity.gov and use their "Retirement Estimator" an online calculator.
- You are always welcome to call our office and we will gladly go online and help walk you through.
I'm sure there are still other ways to get an estimate, but these options should be all you need. If you need any additional options please feel free to call the office. Please feel free to ask us questions anytime, we're here to serve as a resource for you. |
You can now add the financial industry to the growing list of businesses on the "fix-it" list maintained by the Obama administration. Last Wednesday's announced overhaul of the securities industry, sweeping aside standards that had been in place since the Great Depression, would give FDIC-like powers to the Federal Reserve and create a new consumer protection agency. After just 5 months in Washington, President Obama's team has already altered the landscape of the auto and health care industries, but last week's proposal may be the most significant yet (source: White House). The Fed will hold a 2-day meeting beginning tomorrow. Although the stock and bond markets have no expectations of any immediate rate hike (from the current near-zero level of short-term rates), observers will be looking for clues relating to potential future action by the central bank. The last time the Fed raised interest rates was 6/29/06 or almost 3 years ago (source: Federal Reserve). With just 7 trading days remaining in the 2nd quarter, Wall Street is looking for a late June surge that would keep the S&P 500 on its path to a 4th consecutive up-month. The stock index has gained just +0.3% (total return) so far in June, this after a +25.8% gain in the 3 previous months (source: BTN Research). |
Notable Numbers
1. BIG SPENDER - The US government is projected to spend $4.0 trillion during the current 2009 fiscal year, equal to $1 billion of government spending every 2.2 hours throughout the year (source: Treasury Department). 2. INVESTING AFTER A RECESSION BEGINS - The S&P 500 has gained an average of +13.1% per year (total return) for the 10-year period that started on January 1st of the calendar year following the official beginning date of each of the last 5 recessions. Our current recession began in December 2007 The S&P 500 is an unmanaged index of 500 widely held stocks that is generally considered representative of the US stock market (source: BTN Research). 3. FUTURE JOB OPPORTUNITIES - The US workforce will experience a shortage of at least 300,000 nurses by the year 2020. There are more than 1.5 million full-time nurses employed at US hospitals today (source: Health Affairs). 4. THE NEXT PROBLEM? - The commercial real estate industry (i.e., office buildings, hotels, retail stores, shopping centers) includes $3.4 trillion of real estate. $700 billion of loans connected to the commercial real estate industry has been packaged together into bonds and sold to investors, i.e., they were securitized. Commercial mortgages are typically written for 5, 7 or 10 years, oftentimes with a balloon payment due at the end of the financing period (source: Wall Street Journal, USA Today). |
As always, if there's anything we can help you with, please feel free to call the office anytime.
I hope you have a great week.
Sincerely,
John John W. Pink, Sr. J. Pink Associates, Inc., Financial Advisors
