The S&P 500 has been on a roll for the last 3 months. After stumbling out of the blocks in January and February, the stock index was down a whopping 18.2% YTD (total return) as the month of March began. But the S&P 500 index has rebounded strongly, gaining +25.8% over the subsequent 3-months of March-April-May. As June begins today, the S&P 500 is up +3.0% YTD (source: BTN Research). Stock, bond and real estate investors have been watching the rising yield on the 10-year Treasury note with concern. The yield got as high as 3.75% last Wednesday, up from 2.22% at the first of the year. The fear is that the Fed's purchase of nearly $150 billion of Treasury securities and mortgage-backed assets in the last 10 weeks may not be enough to keep interest rates down. Any near term recovery in the US housing industry may be difficult to achieve if rates keep rising (source: BTN Research). The nationwide average price of a gallon of gasoline has gone up for 33 consecutive days, reaching $2.50 a gallon yesterday (Sunday). The cost of gas was only $1.62 a gallon at the beginning of the year but was $3.98 a gallon a year ago today (source: AAA). |
Notable Numbers
1. I WANT IT NOW - A person born in 1947 is eligible for full Social Security retirement benefits at age 66 or in 2013. If that individual elected to take his/her benefits early at age 62 (i.e., in 2009), the monthly checks will be permanently reduced by 25% vs. what he/she would otherwise receive at his/her full retirement age (source: Social Security Administration). 2. GIMME A BREAK - A first-time home buyer has until 12/01/09 (i.e., 6 months from today) to purchase a home that qualifies for a tax credit that is worth 10% of the cost of the home up to $8,000. The tax credit, which is phased out at adjusted gross income levels of $150,000 and up for a married couple, is claimed on IRS Form 5405. Please consult a qualified tax advisor or legal professional for details (source: National Association of Home Builders). 3. A LOT OF LOANS - The "loan-to-deposit" ratio for US banks was 51% in 1960, i.e., half of a bank's deposits were loaned out. By 2007, the "loan-to-deposit" ratio for US banks was 113% (source: Fortune, FDIC). 4. READING, WRITING AND ARITHMETIC - Only 3 states (Missouri, Utah and Tennessee) require high school students to take at least 1 semester of personal finance (source: House of Representatives). |
As always, if there's anything we can help you with, please feel free to call the office anytime.
I hope you have a great week.
Sincerely,
John John W. Pink, Sr. J. Pink Associates, Inc., Financial Advisors
