Canberra BusinessPoint
Clinic: Managing Business Uncertainty

Dramatic or unplanned periods of upheaval, due to internal and external factors, are common in business. What is less common is planning for them. Large companies typically have the contingency plans, systems and cash reserves available to weather these storms. However, for small business, the unexpected incapacity or death of a founding director, a major regulatory change that impacts on the ability to trade, a divergence in strategic direction, or some legal actions (such as divorce or dispute with a creditor or client) can result in the wind up of the business - either voluntarily or not, and even if the business was trading profitably and successfully prior to the event.

In this Canberra BusinessPoint Clinic, we are interested in helping any established business facing such uncertainty to understand their options in order to resolve their financial issues as early as possible - and before they become terminal. The result of business uncertainty doesn't always have to be negative - it can also result in new business opportunities and stronger businesses.

Possible Topics include:

  • Disputes among shareholders and business partners
  • Succession planning, including sudden incapacity of key individuals
  • Insolvency and financial demands
  • Selling a business to access your retirement savings
  • Identifying and preventing fraud in your business
  • Dealing with the ATO and what to do if faced with a demand or penalty notice
  • Business implications of various Family Court decisions
  • Dealing with major or stalled litigation
  • How to resurrect an underperforming business

Each one-on-one, confidential session will run for 50 minutes. You will never be 'sold to' in a CBP clinic - this is about the specific advice you need right now.

To ensure that participants get the most out of the time-limited session, they will be required to brief a Canberra BusinessPoint advisor prior to making a booking.

Henry and Tony have combined professional experience of nearly 50 years in both public and private practice.

Henry is a Chartered Accountant, registered company liquidator and trustee in bankruptcy and has, for the past 29 years, practiced in insolvency and litigation support. His wealth of experience across a range of business sectors has provided him with skills to identify the signs of business failure, as well as specialist skills in recognising the early warning signs and, where possible, stepping in before the inevitable occurs. Throughout his career, Henry has been successful in applying strategies to save many businesses from what initially appeared to be unrecoverable circumstances.

Tony is a Chartered Accountant and has been practicing in insolvency for 10 years.  Prior to beginning private practice, Tony worked for 10 years in the ATO as an investigator in the Serious Non-Compliance division.
