Greetings!
Lighthouse is getting right into the swing of things during Business in Focus Month. Its first event, the Capital Angels Investment Readiness Seminar, was a great success. Lighthouse teamed up with Capital Angels and NICTA to deliver quality angel education to a group of innovative entrepreneurs.
Coming up next week is another collaborative Business in Focus Month event with Lighthouse partnering with Schmooze and Craft ACT: Craft and Design Centre for the September Schmooze. Given the month's creativity theme, Lighthouse has invited creative entrepreneur Catherine Prosser to be the guest speaker. The Schmooze events are great for networking and this special joint event booked up quickly. We look forward to seeing those of you who can attend.
Other upcoming events include the Canberra BusinessPoint Master Class, Maximising Your Chances of Tender Success, and the Design and Invention Commercialisation Conference. See below for more on these events.
Lighthouse is working with applicants from the fourth Brilliant Idea microcredit loan funding round to finalise agreements. We are pleased to announce the first of new loan recipients, Janette Vonthethoff, who will use her loan towards the fit-out of new premises for April's Caravan, a unqiue retail concept including rare vintage clothing and socialising around a cup of coffee or tea.
Kind regards,
Anna Pino, Cindy Reese Mitchell, Su Hodge, Lachlan Blackhall, Lyn Robbins and Lauren Mitchell

Lighthouse will conclude its Canberra BusinessPoint
Master Class series for 2011 with the topic of Tender Writing on 19 October. Love them or loathe them, tenders are a fact of business life when doing business with government at local, state or federal level. To be successful, SMEs working with government require:
- an approach to tenders that makes sense and is consistent and repeatable
- a process that reduces the overall burden of putting together a response
- an understanding of the environment that ensures the highest quality outcome and increases your chances of success.
Lighthouse is pleased to welcome two excellent facilitators for this topic, Rick Bushell, Founder of TenderBytes and Peter Alexander, CIO, the Treasury. Rick will offer practical tips on pre-qualifying and preparing your responses. Peter will provide invaluable insight from the tender reviewer's perspective including 'war stories' on how SMEs get responses wrong. Spaces are strictly limited and please note the change in location from our previous Master Class sessions.

Lighthouse will present a Brilliant Idea Orientation Session on Thursday, 29 September. The session is designed to introduce interested women entrepreneurs to the Brilliant Idea program and the ACT Women's Microcredit Loan Program. This introductory session launches a new loan funding round, the final for this year, and gives women the opportunity to meet the Lighthouse team and other women interested in business ownership and support from the program.
During the four hour session, we look at microcredit programs, the psychology of business ownership and practical business planning concepts. It gives participants the opportunity to review the loan application process and discuss their ideas and businesses in an encouraging environment. The session is free and includes lunch.
This program is appropriate for women already operating a micro business, looking to transition a 'hobby' into a business or simply has an idea that she would like some support to develop.

Save the Dates
November is shaping up to be Inventor and Inventions month at Lighthouse. On 4 November, we are hosting a Design and Invention Commercialisation Convention with the University of Canberra at the Ann Harding Conference Centre.
The purpose of this 1-day event is to get inventors out of their sheds and in to a forum to gain practical guidance and advice on the design and invention commercialisation pathway.
The objective is to minimize the investments of time, expense and frustration inventors often experience in developing their ideas. We have a world-class line up of inventors, designers, experts in prototype engineering, commercialisation, IP and licensing.
Early-bird registrations are now open so please make your plans to attend now.
On 24 November, we are again offering our highly sought-after Canberra Business Point clinics. The topic is Patents.
A limited number of 50 minute consultations with a patent attorney and the Lighthouse Commercialisation Manager are available. Bookings for these clinics will open early November. | |
