Ask Lighthouse
Is my idea 'innovative' enough to receive a grant?

A question that we frequently receive at Lighthouse is how is to make a certain grant applications stand out.   In highly competitive situations (as is nearly all innovation funding is) there are three primary criteria.  Your idea must demonstrate:

1.       significant commercial potential

2.       a high-level of innovation

3.       benefits to the nation (state or territory)

Most technologists and entrepreneurs wouldn't go down the long and difficult journey of commercialisation if they didn't meet at least the first two criteria.  The response to the third is nearly always, "I pay my taxes, isn't that enough?"

Nevertheless, many are disappointed when they are knocked back.  So, let's delve more deeply by exploring some ways to demonstrate how your idea (project, invention or business) meet these criteria:

 Small Business Support Line 1 800 77 7275
Australian Government Response to GFC

The small business support line was established by the federal government in response to the Global Financial Crisis.  The purpose initially was to provide businesses with an avenue to direct issues related to access to and the cost of bank finance.   Enough through the liquidity crisis didn't hit as hard as expected, the Government has continued its commitment to the Support Line.  It is now a clearing house for a range of small business issues including:

  • business planning
  • registrations and licensing
  • e-business and online assistance
  • marketing and promotion
  • government initiative, grants and assistance
  • employing staff
  • importing and exporting
  • insurances
  • government regulation
  • personal stress and hardship counselling
  • human resource management
  • other issues small businesses are dealing with during the global recession.

Of course, much of this information is available on the Government's substantial business portal: www.business.gov.au.  However, the small business support line is a terrific back up.  You can be assured when you call, you are getting local (they haven't outsourced this service overseas) and expertise advice from a team of committed and experienced business development and advice experts.

Lighthouse applauds this effort by the Government to coordinate much needed business advisory services and giving people, particularly in regional areas, the opportunity to speak with some one knowledgeable.   After you've consulted the support line, don't forget that Lighthouse also provides business referrals.  Visit www.lighthouseinnovation.com.au to schedule your free (no strings, we promise!) initial consultation in our offices or you
