TWOONEONE2-1-1 Success Story

 "Nobody Cares..."

Several months ago, an elderly gentleman called 2-1-1 in need of counseling.  As I spoke with the man, I quickly realized that he needed more than counseling, he needed someone to talk him out of suicide. When he finally admitted that he was seriously thinking of taking his own life, I quickly turned to my sheet of policies and procedures for suicide calls and tried to transfer him to the crisis line. He insisted that he didn't want to talk to anyone but me.

As we spoke, I realized that a piece of paper couldn't tell me about this man - his thoughts, his fears, what his cat's name was, what, if anything made him happy, and what made him sad. So, I began to talk to him on a more personal level. I tried to help him identify something in his life he could be happy about. It took a long time, as he said he had no one in his life.  I later found out he had a cat named Ringo, and a brother he never spoke to.

CO 211
He continuously repeated, "Nobody cares if I'm dead or alive."  I said, "I do, sir. And I think your cat would miss you too."  To him, the cat and I were the only two living creatures that cared about him.

Again, I tried to transfer him to the crisis line, but he didn't want to speak to them. I continued to encourage him, reminding him that he had a place and purpose in this world, even if he hadn't found it yet. He reluctantly argued as I continued to point out things in his life that made it worth living. About an hour later, he was comfortable talking to someone on the crisis line. I gave him referrals to mental health services, and together we called the crisis center.

The rest of the week I couldn't help thinking about the gentleman, wondering what had happened to him. The following week I received a phone call from him, thanking me and the 2-1-1 hotline for saving his life.  "I never met anyone who believed in me before," he said, "till now." He shared with me that he had gotten in touch with his brother, and was having dinner with him that very night. He said he hadn't intended on calling 2-1-1 and definitely not sharing the fact that he was thinking about taking his own life - but he said he was glad he did.

FUNDALLOCATIONFund Allocations

SPECIAL THANKS to our

incredible 2012 PPUW Fund Allocation Committee volunteers!  Over the past three months, nearly a hundred volunteers participated in the allocation process for either Success By 6 or Safety Net Services.

Their training was put into practice as they considered two key questions: How important is this program to the community? And how confident are we that the program will achieve its intended results?

The group dedicated their time and expertise in discerning where our limited Community Fund dollars should go. To say that it was a difficult task is a huge understatement, and we can't thank them enough!

The details of 2012-2013 funding will be announced in early June - but for now - we want to express how much we appreciate these amazing volunteers!

SBSIXFirst Early Literacy Forum Big Success!

On April 13, 2012, our Success By 6 staff hosted an Early Literacy Forum to convene organizations and individuals around early childhood education. Represented were 15 early literacy entities. The forum allowed participants to determine what early literacy programs already exist in our community and what programs provide books to young children and their families and what programs need them. The dialog provided a foundation to establish different ways to strengthen collaborations and share resources. Through this gathering, we realized:

* There are a great number of programs that provide books to many of the same families;

* There are new early literacy programs that seek partnerships to meet their goals; and

* We need to do a better job of communicating what we're doing with one another.

The more we know about what other early literacy programs are doing, the better we can serve children and families together.

We are already seeing new collaborations grow from this gathering! Early Books Early Learning is partnering with Community Partnership for Childhood Development (CPCD) to get kids signed up for book deliveries to their home. Mother Read/Father Read is partnering with Early Connections to bring its parent/child literacy education programs to Early Connections staff and families. The Pikes Peak Library District may bring their Kindergarten Countdown programs to more agencies this summer.

These are just a few of the cooperatives discussed at the Early Literacy Forum and we plan on expanding the conversation throughout the community.

Thank you to all the agencies and individuals that made it an outstanding success.
