PROFILE ON HOMELESSNESS

In the month of January, 2-1-1 received 57 calls from individuals and/or families who were homeless.
Of the 57 calls received, 61% found themselves homeless for the first time. There were 35 children with 59% of those being 6 years of age and under.
UTILITY ASSISTANCE Requests for utility assistance have been the number one requested service since 2-1-1 became available in our community 7 1/2 years ago.
In January, 28% of the calls we received were for utility assistance. With the eligibility changes to LEAP (Low Income Energy Assistance Program) and the decrease in federal funding, many individuals/families that received LEAP in the past no longer qualify for the program, leaving them unable to pay their winter heating bills. Working in conjunction with local utility companies and our 2-1-1 agencies, 2-1-1 assists people with finding ways to pay their energy bills. In many cases, if an individual/family has already received assistance in the last 12 months, they are not eligible to receive assistance again.
2-1-1 Community Specialists work hard to find creative ways for those people to be able to pay their bill. Can we offer them a food pantry to save money on their grocery bill, connect them with an agency to help pay their rent, or offer them a free tax preparation site so they can put the money saved toward utilities?
Thank you to all the agencies who work so tirelessly to help those in need in our community. Together, we can make a difference!
