2011 NSN Loons and More Workshop

You don't always need a tripod to create HDR (High Dynamic Range) images from multiple exposures. Here I was photographing from a boat and wanted to capture the fog as best I could but did not want to over-expose the sun so I took three quick shots in a burst while holding the camera as still as I could and exposed one shot for the highlights, one for the middle tones and one for the shadows. Using your camera's auto exposure bracketing mode (AEB) will allow you to capture a series of images at different exposures without having to manually change the settings before the next shot. Here I bracketed by one stop in each direction but found that I only needed two of the three images to capture both the highlights and the shadows the way I wanted to. By using a program like NIK HDR Efex Pro I was able to easily blend the two exposures into one image and carefully adjust the tones and the details. The program also does a great job with any minor alignment issues such as you might encounter when hand-holding. Gura Gear Kiboko Bag » Gear up this summer with the best selling and most raved about bag for nature photographers!

We have secured a limited quantity from the very next shipment and they are available to order now for delivery by mid-August or earlier.

  • Lightweight: Kiboko is the only bag of its class that is only four pounds. Made from high-tech Dimension Polyant VX-21.
  • Durable: The outer materials are abrasion- and tear-resistant while the specially designed lightweight padding can handle the rough impacts associated with the handling and transport of gear in to remote regions or urban landscapes.
  • Comfortable: Kiboko can be carried using our unique ergonomically-placed handles, on your shoulder, or as a backpack using our retractable highly-engineered harness system.
While I have owned a lot of backpacks, and many of them are great bags, my Gura Gear Kiboko bag is my #1 go to backpack in almost every situation whether it be fully packed with gear or used for just one camera and a jacket. I take it with me when I travel and also use in the field a great deal. It is SO light and airy yet so well made and durable, as well as comfortable to wear, that it's the only bag that really seems to have found the best of both worlds when it comes to a truly lightweight full sized photo backpack. It is designed to travel internationally and fits under the seats of most aircraft, including most of the small planes, yet can hold a ton of stuff including a 600/4 and 500/4 - and even at the same time! When my workshop participants see mine it's a must have if they don't already have one! -Greg Downing
